Summary
     It has been five years since Mika was adopted and was taken on a wild
     ride due to his new father having designed a miracle drug that would
     lead him and his family to travel from place to place. Now that the
     drug is on the market, Mika and his family are able to return to the
     small town that he had grown up in. He must readjust to life in a
     place that is familiar yet brand new and begin his search to find his
     precious friend that he had promised to reunite with.
Notes
     Hello there! I've written several fanfics before throughout my life
     but this is the first one that I've ever posted online so please bare
     with me. I wanted to write a cute highschool AU though I decided to
     have it take place in America because why not. So that means that
     Mika will call Yuu "Yuu" rather than "Yuu-chan" but I might make
     something happen to change that if it bothers me enough. I hope you
     guys enjoy!
     (Also in case anyone was wondering the name of the fic came from the
     Owl City song of the same name.)
***** A (Not So) New Place *****
The first day of school. A day that has always been dreaded by Mika in the past
five years. He hasn't stayed at the same school for over a year since his
father invented a new drug that had to be introduced to the entire world. Mika
had basically lived in every major city in the US, as well as some cities in
other countries such as Tokyo and Berlin. Some would say that Mika's so lucky
to be able to travel the ways he has, but honestly not having a permanent home
isn't as fun as it seems. Switching schools all the time makes it difficult to
form friendships or to get comfortable learning in a certain way. He's always
the kid the class admires at first, but then is forgotten once the new kid
mystery magic wears off.
Now that his father's drug is helping millions and being sold at drug stores
around the world, his family decided to move back to his hometown to live the
rest of their lives comfortably and to allow Mika to have the high school life
he deserves. Mika had his doubts though. He wouldn't be surprised if his
parents decided to up and move again. Even though Mika wasn't expecting to
stay, he was happy to be back in his hometown.
This town is was where he was born and where the orphanage he had grown up in
was located. Mika's biological parents left him at the tender age of five. Old
enough for him to remember them and their abuse, but young enough that he was
able to move on to a happier life. He lived in the orphanage until he was
eleven when his new parents came and adopted him. Mika is happy to be living
with his current parents and he loved them a ton, but life in the orphanage was
not all that bad and he misses it. The children of the orphanage were like a
family to him. Many of the younger kids looked up to him as he cared for them
and the older kids were great friends and role models that he cherished as
well. He remembers them all and constantly thinks of how they're all doing now.
Though one person he thinks of the most is Yuu.
Yuu was the closest friend Mika had while he was living at the orphanage. They
were inseparable. Yuu was always at Mika's side and was there for him in the
good and bad times throughout his young life. He missed them terribly and would
think about him constantly throughout the years. They had promised one another
that they would meet again when they got adopted. Mika was the first to go and
promised Yuu they would meet up again. He had wanted to try writing letters to
Yuu to stay in touch, but with the constant movement of his family and the fact
that Yuu had gotten adopted shortly after he had it had proven to be very
difficult.
He would definitely try to seek out Yuu while he was in town, but what was on
his mind right now was getting through the first day of school as the new kid
beginning in an already started school year. It was October, meaning that
school had already been going on for over a month now. It's also sophomore
year, meaning most people have already made their cliques and best buds. Mika
prepared to either stick out more than usual or not be noticed by anyone.
Mika groaned as he got out of bed that morning to get ready for his eventful
day. He got dressed, had breakfast with his mom and dad, and then proceeded to
where he was told the bus would be picking him up. There wasn't anyone besides
himself as the stop and the bus ride to school was noisy, but no one really
spoke to him besides the bus driver who he had to give some permission forms
too.
Once at school, he was instructed to head to the main office to turn in more
forms and to retrieve his schedule. Glancing over his schedule, he saw his
first class was English II, which wasn't all that bad since English was his
favorite subject. He felt English would be a nice way to start the day. A lady
who worked at the front office led him to the classroom where the teacher was
already waiting outside for him.
"Hey there. You must be the new student. Mikaela right? I'm Mrs. Hanayori. The
plan is that I'll bring you into the class and have you introduce yourself,
show you your seat, and then start the lesson. I've left a textbook and the
required reading on your desk. Also, feel free to ask me questions throughout
the lesson when you need to. Sound good to you?"
Mika nodded as he soaked in the information. Mika hated introducing himself,
but at least it was something he had perfected in the past several years.
Mrs. Hanayori opened the door and they walked into the quiet classroom that
contained many students engulfed in their books and others who had obviously
spent the time doing other things.
"Attention class," Mrs. Hanayori exclaimed as she tapped a ruler on her desk.
"Today we are welcoming a new student. He's come from a high school quite a
ways away so please be kind to him and help him feel warmly welcomed to our
school."
Mrs. Hanayori motioned towards Mika for him to start his introduction. "Hello.
My name is Mi-"
"Mika!?!?"
Mika looked up to see who interrupted him. His eyes widened when they fell upon
a mop of messy black hair on a boy who looked an awful lot like Yuu. It looks
like Mika's search for his childhood friend has unexpectedly ended.
***** Reunion *****
Chapter Summary
     Looks like Mika won't have to search for Yuu after all.
Chapter Notes
     Well here's chapter two where Yuu makes a fool of himself. Enjoy!
"Mika!?!?" Yuu exclaimed, slamming his chair way back into the desk behind him
as he stood up. Yuu didn't look much different from when they were kids. He
still had the same messy raven black hair, enchanting green emeralds for eyes,
and goofy facial expressions. Though of course he had grown taller, his voice
got deeper, and now has more of an adult physique. Judging by his current
actions, Mika assumed his personality probably hadn't changed that much, which
gave Mika much relief. Mika only had seconds to marvel at the Yuu before him
due to his teacher stepping in, bringing him back to reality.
"Yuu! We do not interrupt others. Even if we might know them," she scolded. She
then looked over towards Mika. "I'm sorry for the interruption. Please continue
your introduction,"
Yuu’s sudden appearance caused Mika to temporarily forget what was going on. He
quickly came back to his senses and continued "Oh yeah um. I'm Mikaela Hyakuya.
I used to live here several years ago. Also please call me Mika"
"Hyakuya? That's the same last name as Yuu's. You guys related?" blurted out a
girl with lavender hair as she smirked at Mika.
"A-ah no. We just come from the same orphanage," Mika explained nervously. He’d
never had such an eventful introduction before.
“Alright alright. You guys can talk about all this after class. Mika, please
sit in the seat located in the back to the right corner.” Mrs. Hanayori pointed
in the general direction. The seat Mrs. Hanayori was talking about happened to
be the seat next to the guy behind Yuu. He wasn’t the closest he could be to
Yuu, but it was great luck that they were close as they were.
As he sat down, Mrs. Hanayori began her lesson. On his desk was the textbook
that was promised, which contained a collection of short stories and grammar
lessons, and a copy of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Inside was a piece of
paper which contained a list of when each chapter should be read by. Mika
needed to read over half the book before Friday in order to catch up to the
rest of the class. That was not much of a problem since Mika loved to read. It
also helped that he had read the book once before on his own.
After looking over his new materials, he realized that he had tuned out the
teacher by accident. He looked up and couldn’t help but notice some movement in
the corner of his eye. It came from the direction of Yuu. Could he have been
staring at him? No it was probably his imagination. Turning your back to glance
at someone could be too risky. Now glancing at someone while facing the front
of the classroom was a different story. Once Mika realized the class was
discussing the most recent events in the chapters the class had read over the
weekend, he figured he could afford to space out for a bit. It was his first
day after all. Teachers didn’t expect him to be engaged in class right at the
start. He looked over at Yuu. Was this Yuu the same Yuu he had know five years
ago? He wanted to talk to him and see how his life had been. Would Yuu even
talk to him? It had been several years. It peaked his interest when he noticed
Yuu going through his backpack, though he could not continue to watch him for
long since the class discussion had ended.
“You guys had some really good thoughts but I’m afraid we must move along to
our weekly vocab. Everyone get out a sheet of paper and prepare to take notes”,
Mrs. Hanayori told the class as she began to set up the projector. As soon as
the words had left the teacher's mouth, Mika began to get out a notebook. Once
his notebook was on his desk, Mika felt a tap on his shoulder.
It was from the kid behind Yuu. The guy had short pink hair glasses, and looked
pretty pissed off, making Mika feel a bit on the edge. “Hey new kid. Dumb ass
told me to give this to you.” In his hand was a small folded piece of paper
which he handed over to Mika. He glanced up to see Yuu looking back at him with
a wide grin. He opened up the note to reveal a sloppily written message.
Hey dude howve u been? Ive been looking 4 u 4EVER. ever since i got my new
parents ive been trying 2 track u down. i was starting to think i would never c
u again. I have SO many questions 2 ask u. U should come eat lunch with me and
my friends. We usually eat back behind the school near the soccer feld. It
shouldnt be 2 hard 2 find.
-Yuu
After reading the note, Mika could feel his cheeks warm up and a small smile
make its way on his face. He looked up to see Yuu’s back turned to him once
again. He was pleasantly surprised to find that Yuu was the first to engage in
conversation and also that Yuu’s hand writing was as terrible as it had been
before. He also felt bad for leaving Yuu without a trace. He flipped over the
piece of paper to write a reply.
I’m sorry for being difficult to find. My new family travels a lot and I have
not had a physical home since the time I lived at the orphanage. It would be an
honor to join you and your friends at lunch if they do not mind having a
stranger.
P.S. You spelled “field” wrong. Also you really shouldn't be using text talk in
a note.
-Mika
He glanced over it to make sure there weren’t any spelling errors and then
politely tapped the pink haired guy and gave him the note. The other man took
the note and flicked Yuu in the back of the head. “You managed to get a
response from Prince Charming, Cinderella."
“Give me that. He’s not Prince Charming, he's my family. You’re just jealous
that I know the new kid, Bitch Baby.” Yuu teased as he grabbed the note. The
pink haired guy rolled his eyes in annoyance and then laid his head down on his
desk as if to fall asleep. Mika watched with nervous excitement the as Yuu
opened up the note to read his message. As Yuu read, Mika realized that he had
not copied a single word down from the vocabulary list. He knew at this rate he
wouldn't be able to get every word down, but he still scrambled to write down
as much as he could. As he was writing, he could hear Yuu talking with pinky
again.
“Yo four-eyes. Give this to Mika.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I’ve already played the delivery boy enough today. Give it to him yourself,”
he mumbled as he buried his face in his arms.
“Why you little-“
Yuu was cut off by Mrs. Hanayori. “Yuu stop talking in class. This vocabulary
will be on next Friday’s test you know.”
“Yes Ma’am,” Yuu grumbled as he slouched back in his chair.
A few minutes passed when Mika noticed Yuu moving around once again. Yuu was
looking at him, trying to get his attention. He seemed to be motioning that he
was going to throw something. Mika stopped what he was doing and opened up his
hands, barely catching the folded piece of paper that was thrown at him. Mrs.
Hanayori saw what had happened in the corner of her eye and turned around to
yell at Yuu once again.
“There will also be no throwing in my classroom, Yuu. And what is this? From
where I am standing, there appears to be nothing on your desk. Talk to me after
class Yuuichirou Hyakuya.”
“I was writing. I just put my stuff away early” Yuu argued, obviously not
pleased.
“I will be the judge of that,” she replied as she went back to explaining the
vocabulary.
Once the coast was clear, Mika opened up the note.
correcting my spelling as always. U rlly r Mika. I was having doubts 4 a minete
there. U seem so different. :P
-Yuu
As soon as Mika finished reading the note, the long awaited bell rung through
the school as students poured into the halls. Mika began to pack his things.
Yuu began to approach him but was stopped by Mrs. Hanayori. “We need to have a
talk about you constantly goofing off in my class Mr. Hyakuya. This is getting
out of hand.”
Yuu groaned in frustration. Before he continued his conversation with the
irritated English teacher and turned around towards Mika. “See you at lunch!”
He exclaimed joyfully.
Mika was about to exit the classroom but before he left, he let Yuu know he
spelled “minute” wrong which earned him a Yuu with his tongue childishly
sticking out.
***** A Memorable Lunch *****
Chapter Summary
     Lunch doesn't go exactly as planned.
Chapter Notes
See the end of the chapter for notes
The rest of Mika's morning classes went by without being very eventful and were
not too hard to find. Precalculus was boring as expected. The American history
teacher was nice and gave a review packet of the past units to help him catch
up. In chemistry there was lab, so the teacher helped him with notes while the
other students mixed chemicals together and almost caused an explosion. Now it
was finally the lunch Mika had been looking forward too since Yuu had invited
him via a passed note. It was hard for Mika to even concentrate on his other
classes he was so excited. He had finally been united with his best friend he
hadn't seen for years and could not help his mind from wandering to questions
he may have for Yuu and what had really changed the past five years.
Thankfully Mika had packed a lunch today, so he began to make his way down the
hall to where he believed the soccer field was. He was about to reach the
double doors that led to the outside when a voice from behind halted him.
"Yoohoo! I don't think I've seen your pretty face around these parts. This
school is so small! I can recognize just about any of these dandelions in a
crowd. Are you the new student? Hmmm...Mikaela was it?" The voice came from a
tall, flamboyant man with long silver hair. Just then tone of his voice was
enough for Mika to get a sickening feeling about this guy, but he assumed he
was a teacher so he answered him politely.
"Yes. I am Mikaela Hyakuya but please call me Mika. I am a sophomore that just
transferred here."
The silver haired man clapped his hands in joy. "Wonderful! I was just looking
for you. I am the Latin teacher Mr. Bathory by the way. I believe you are in my
sixth period. Do you have a moment? There are some things I would like to go
over before we begin class."
"I...uh...", Mika tried to tell him about lunch, but Mr. Bathory didn't give
him the chance.
"Great! This way please!" he exclaimed joyfully as he placed a hand behind
Mika's back and led him in the direction of his classroom, which was only
approximately thirty seconds from where they were previously standing.
Mika hoped that whatever this teacher wanted, it would be quick. He really was
looking forward to lunch with Yuu and didn't want to stand him up. If he ruined
this, he was sure Yuu wouldn't invite him to lunch again, or would want to see
his face again. He sure as hell that he didn't want to lose his best friend
again.
Mr. Bathory motioned for Mika to sit at a desk at the front of the classroom
and pulled up a chair for himself to sit in front of it. Once Mika was
situated, Mr. Bathory began. "I understand that you have been placed in my
Latin II class correct? I will have you know that my courses tend to be more
rigorous compared to those in opposing schools and I just wanted to test you
real quick to make sure that you were put in the right place. So please fill
out as many of the blanks that you possibly can," he explained as he pulled out
a packet and placed it on Mika's desk. The packet was large but it looked
pretty simple, so Mika started to fill it out immediately. The quicker he got
this done, the quicker he would be able to eat lunch with Yuu.
                                     ~ ~ ~
"Done," Mika exclaimed immediately after he filled in the last blank. He looked
at the clock to see that he had ten minutes left till the end of lunch. If he
hurried, he could make it to at least explain the situation to Yuu. He plopped
the packet in front of Mr. Bathory and began to head towards the door. Sadly a
grip on his backpack held him in place.
"Hold it! I need to look over this before you leave. I need to determine
whether or not to keep you in my class," Mr. Bathory explained as he let go of
the backpack and began to flip through the packet.
"But Mr. Bathory, I haven't eaten lunch yet," Mika tried to argue.
"You can eat it here. And don't even use that 'but I need to go to the
cafeteria' excuse. Your backpack is unzipped and I can see your lunch."
Of course, that was the exact excuse Mika was planning to use, and so he
angrily flopped back into his seat. Nine more minutes left. Mika thought about
getting out his lunch, but settled for glaring at the teacher before him who
had robbed him of his irreplaceable chance to get back in touch with Yuu.
He watched as Mr. Bathory casually flipped through the packet while humming
happily. "My my Mika. This is quite extraordinary I must say. I have yet to
find a single wrong answer."
Mika glanced at the clock. Seven minutes. He was starting to loose his patients
with this guy more and more. Compliments could not fix that.
Three more minutes passed by, leaving only a mere four minutes till the end of
lunch. Soon enough the annoying excuse for a teacher spoke. "Well Mika, I must
say that was the best I've seen yet. You are definitely in the right course.
You might even be eligible for the next level."
"Awesome. Can I go now?" Mika was really done with this guy. He glanced up at
the clock again. Two minutes left.
"Well, I would really like to give you a test for the next level but I reckon
we won't have enough time for that. I guess that means you're free to go. See
you sixth period," Mr. Bathory waved his hand to the door lazily as if to shoo
him out.
Mika instantly bolted out of the classroom and didn't look back. He just wanted
to make an effort to run into Yuu. He started jogging towards the double doors
when the horrible bell that marked the end of lunch echoed throughout the
school. Mika pushed through the doors desperately and weaved through groups of
people to try and make his way to the soccer field. When he finally reached the
area of the soccer field he looked around to try and find a trace of Yuu. After
checking all the places that looked like the type of places that people would
hang out at, Mika came to the conclusion that Yuu had already left. Mika cursed
to himself quietly and then made his way in the direction of the gym for fifth
period.
Chapter End Notes
     Hope you liked it! I promise that there will be more Mika and Yuu
     interaction next chapter.
***** More Unpredictable Encounters *****
Chapter Summary
     Looks like Latin won't be so bad after all.
Chapter Notes
     Thank you all for reading! This chapter's a bit short but the next
     two will be quite a bit longer. Enjoy!
Gym was the basketball unit and Mika could have cared less. He barely listened
to the coach's instructions and was more than happy enough to angrily bounce
the ball across the court and throw the thing into the so called basket. Some
of Mika's classmates were impressed by his seemingly great skills and how he
was super into the game, while in reality Mika was just letting out the anger
he had within from his endeavor at lunch.
After a few more shots and awes from impressed onlookers, gym class ended. Mika
took his time changing back into his regular clothes and hesitantly made his
way back to the cursed classroom for the last period of the day. He walked into
the classroom and was pleased to see that Mr. Bathory was not in yet. Who was
in the classroom was some kids Mika didn't recognize and the one and only Yuu
talking to some young looking kid with fudgey brown hair. He stopped when he
saw Yuu and thought about whether or not it would be a good idea to walk up to
him. Would Yuu be angry? Disappointed? Uncaring? Mika didn't have a clue and
was not sure if he wanted to find out. Even so, he still really wanted to talk
to him and felt like he should explain himself. So, he started to walk towards
Yuu and it did not take long for the said boy to notice him.
"Mika! There you are! Why weren't you at lunch? Did you get lost?" Yuu asked as
he stood up to wrap an arm around Mika’s shoulder, "Or do you not care about me
anymore?" He asked with a childish false face of sadness.
"I was on my way over when a teacher stopped me and made me complete some
stupid test," Mika replied. He felt all his nerves and anger dissolve when Yuu
didn't seem mad or that upset. It was also nice to have Yuu's arm wrapped
around him again. It was nostalgic and comforting.
"Which teacher?" Asked the boy Yuu had been talking too previously. Mika was
about to answer him but before he could, the answer walked proudly through the
door.
"Genus salve! Everyone too your seats for class is about to begin", Mr. Bathory
exclaimed as he pranced into the classroom. "Oh Mika! I must say again that
your score on the placement test was astounding! I really would love to try and
move you to level three, but I can not do so at this moment in time. Please sit
up here where you can bring life to this dead language."
The desk Mr. Bathory had him sitting at was in the front left corner of the
classroom.
"Hey that's the desk next to mine," cried out the brown haired boy. "My name is
Yoichi by the way. Let's go sit down before Mr. Bathory throws a fit," Yoichi
explained joyfully as he got up to move to the front of the classroom. Yuu's
desk was in the middle back. "See ya later Yuu!" Yoichi called out as he led
Mika to the locations of their desks. Mika gave Yuu a small wave and Yuu gave
one in return.
                                      ~~~
Class was as boring as expected. Mr. Bathory would call on Mika to answer
basically every other question, even when he wasn't raising his hand, and would
be ecstatic each time he got them right. Yuu's friend Yoichi seemed pretty nice
in Mika's eyes. He would raise his hand quite often and would get many answer
correct as well. Yoichi helped Mika catch up to what they had learned yesterday
and even let him copy his notes.
Once class was over, everyone, including Mr. Bathory, dashed into the hall. Yuu
instead quickly made his way over to the duo at the front of the class. "Dang
Mika. Mr. Bathory barely let you catch your breath. That creep really likes you
for some reason."
"I wish he didn't. Because of him I didn't eat lunch," Mika grumbled as he
packed his things.
"He didn't let you eat lunch? Man that guy really is a dick," Yuu stated with
astonishment.
"If you're not careful he'll try to make you spend lunch with him every day,"
Yoichi chimed in.
"I hope not. I've already spent enough time with him to last me a lifetime,"
Mika groaned.
The group began to make their way into to the crowded halls while managing to
stay close as they pushed through the rush of people.
"Anything you gotta do before you leave, New Kid?" Yuu asked as he turned to
look at Mika.
"Nope. I think I'm good," Mika replied.
"Anything you need to do after school?"
"Homework," Mika replied with a serious expression which brought out a laugh
from Yoichi and grumble from Yuu.
"Besides homework."
"I've got nothing,"
"Then you wanna go get pizza or something? You're probably starving. Honestly
so am I," Yuu casually asked.
"He didn't eat much cause he spent all of lunch waiting for you to show up. All
we heard from him at lunch was 'Mika this' and 'Mika that'," Yoichi teased,
which got him a shove from Yuu.
"Shut up. You wanna join us?"
"Sorry I can't today. I have a huge lab report due tomorrow," Yoichi explained
as he scratched the back of his head, "I'm sure you guys have a lot of catching
up to do anyway."
"Alright suit yourself," Yuu shrugged.
     The journey to reconnect and get pizza.
Chapter Notes
     Alright here's a bit of Mika and Yuu together time. I hope you guys
     like it.
Yoichi parted from them as soon as they reached the back of the school where
the buses were located. Yuu then began to lead Mika away from the school.
"So. How many cities have you been to?" Yuu asked after a couple seconds of
awkward silence.
"Umm I'd say about twenty-nine give or take. Honestly after the first fifteen
you tend to lose track." All of the new schools and cities had begun to blur
together after a while. It was hard to keep count and what happened where.
"That's pretty rough. How are your parents?"
"They're great actually. They're very supportive and accepting and even though
they've only been my parents for five years, I can tell they care about me.
They've invested a lot of time in making me feel like a member of the family
and have never treated me as an outsider. Mom works from home so I see her all
the time and even though Dad has a lot of work to do, he's home more often than
you'd think," Mika revealed. He looked up at Yuu once they had stopped,
"Honestly my only real complaint about my new life is that I wasn't really able
to spend it here where I'm most comfortable. Here with you."
Yuu looked away quickly and hid his face. "W-well you get to spend it here now
so that should mean your new life is pretty great now."
They had stopped in front of an old black pickup truck. The truck definitely
looked as if it had seen better days. Yuu took off his backpack and rummaged
through it until he found some keys.
"I know you're not sixteen yet," Mika stated as Yuu unlocked the door.
"Shush. I'll be sixteen next week and I've been told that I'm an awesome driver
you know." Yuu threw his backpack into the back seat and Mika did the same as
they both got in the car.
"So why are you driving illegally?" Mika judgingly asked as he buckled his
seatbelt.
Yuu turned on the truck and began to drive out of the student parking lot. Mika
couldn't help gripping the armrest, nervous about the quality of the underage
driver. "Carpooling with my adopted father's a real pain. He always has to go
in early and stay late. We both agreed that it's much easier having me drive
myself," Yuu explained.
Yuu had gotten out of the parking lot and onto the road. So far Yuu's driving
had been smooth, but Mika was yet to be convinced that his life was not in
danger. "So how were you able to get that parking spot without a license?" Mika
may have only been at school for a day, but he still knew the procedures for
getting a parking spot.
"Oh it wasn't hard at all with my adopted father being the principal and all,"
Yuu reasoned nonchalantly.
Mika turned quickly and gave Yuu a look of disbelief. "Whoa. Your adopted
father is Mr. Ichinose? That's lucky for a troublemaker like you. Isn't he
abusing his authority though?" The road got a little bumpy and Mika's grip on
the armrest tightened.
"He only started letting me drive myself a few weeks ago. And I've been
practicing a whole lot with him. He's let, or more like made me, drive him
everywhere ever since I got my permit. He basically treated me like his
personal slave. I promise you I'm not a reckless driver so please don't tear
off my armrest. I would like to keep this truck in the best condition
possible."
"O-oh. Sorry," Mika apologized as he loosened his grip, "Ever since that
incident with the go karts, I have reason to doubt your driving abilities."
Several years ago, the orphanage went to an amusement park together and of
course, Yuu desperately wanted to drive the go karts. All of the single rider
karts were taken and there was only one double rider kart left. Mika didn't
really care much for driving and so he found himself buckled into a mini metal
death trap with a very eager Yuu in the front seat. Everything was fine at
first. Granted, Yuu had some confusion with the gas and brake in the beginning,
which caused some jerking around that almost gave Mika whiplash. Though Yuu
figured things out zoomed around happily with a goofy grin on his face as he
passed several other drivers and made rough left-hand turns. It all turned to
hell when some random kid came along and started bumping into the back of their
cart. Mika convinced Yuu to ignore the young driver at first, but once the kid
started to yell profanity, he lost it. Yuu wiggled the kart around and rammed
into the side of the rude kid's kart. The kid rammed back, pleased with the
rise he had gotten out of the other boy. Yuu then rammed the boy into the wall
with greater force that caused the kart to ricochet and spin out of control.
Yuu then began to drive off but was not looking where he was going and collided
into a poor kid that was trying to avoid the spinning vehicle. The two karts
bounced off one another into other karts which bumped into even more karts.
Resulting in a huge pile up of crushed metal and crying children. Needless to
say that they were kicked out and the orphanage got a ten-year ban from the
amusement park. The two both had headaches and bruises that lasted for weeks
and were grounded for two long months.
Yuu's face turned bright red at the memory. "W-well that wasn't a result of bad
driving. That kid just pissed me off."
Mika couldn't stop a small giggle from leaving his lips. "Of course, of course.
Still doesn't make me feel all that comfortable with you driving."
"Yeah well, you better get used to it. I'm sure I'll be driving you around a
lot in the future," Yuu stated with a shrug.
"What makes you say that?" Mika questioned.
Mika's question caught Yuu off guard. "Well uh I guess I just assumed..."
"I'm just kidding," Mika says jokingly as he lightly punches Yuu in the
shoulder, "I'm sure you will be the designated driver in our future endeavors."
"Gosh Mika that was a bad joke,” Yuu pouted, “Anyways we're here."
The pizza parlor was a small hole in the wall and looked to be privately owned.
Yuu parked the truck and got out with Mika following along.
"Wait till you try this pizza. It's a hundred times better then the delivery
the orphanage used to get for us."
Mika chuckled. "Well I'd imagine anything would be better than that crap they
used to feed us."
"Heh yeah you've got that right."
The inside of the parlor had a cozy feel and was very inviting. It also smelled
amazing which caused Mika's stomach to growl, making Mika realize how hungry he
really was since he skipped lunch and all. They walked up to the front counter
and Mika was a bit surprised to find the pink haired boy who had been seated
next to him in English now behind the counter.
"Welcome to- Oh look, it's the dumbass and his prince," the boy observed as the
two got closer to the counter.
"Yeah yeah whatever shit face," Yuu remarked while picking up a menu and
handing it to Mika. "Here's a list of toppings. They've got loads. Pick
whatever you like. I'm going to get two slices with bacon, pepperoni, and
sausage."
"Isn't that too much meat?" Mika asked with a slight touch of concern in his
tone.
"Not for me, the more meat the better."
"You better watch out. He eats the crap at least twice a week. He's probably
going to die from a heart attack at this rate," the pink haired guy stated
matter-of-factly. While looking at the guy, Mika noticed he had a name tag with
"Shihou Kimizuki" written on it. For a while there, Mika was starting to
believe the guy's name actually was "Shit Face".
After looking over the menu a while longer, he made up his mind. "Can I get two
slices with sun dried tomatoes and bacon?" He began to fish his wallet from his
back pocket before Yuu stopped him.
"Whoa I invited you here today so I'm paying."
"But-"
"No buts. My treat. You can pay next time. It's the first time we've seen each
other in five years. I think that’s enough to call for a celebration."
Mika gave in after that.
Chapter Notes
     Here's some more Mika and Yuu time. Hope you guys enjoy!
Yuu paid as Mika got them drinks. They both pushed through a side door that led
outside and sat at a comfy little table close to the door, where their eyes
were protected from the sinking sun. There was a bit of a chill in the early
October air but Mika didn’t mind it. It was refreshing to have the scent of the
fallen leaves waft through the air.
"So how did you come to meet Mr. Ichinose?" Mika asked casually as he played
with the some straw paper, folding it to format weird shapes.
"Umm it was probably about a month after you left. Guren and his wife, Mahiru
came to the orphanage. Mahiru had cancer and before she passed she wanted to
quote and quote 'make a difference in a child's life'. I’m not all that sure
why she wanted to do that with her final years but I’m thankful anyways. They
wanted an older kid that would be alright with having her for only a couple
years and who got along well with Guren. I guess you could say I fit right into
their criteria.”
“Whoa that’s pretty lucky for you, Yuu. What are the chances?”
“Yeah I definitely didn’t see it coming”, Yuu replied as he gave a small smile,
reliving the memories. He continued, “Anyways, Mahiru was really nice and
showed me all the compassion she could, even on her worst days, for the three
years we had together. I actually felt like I had a real mom for a while there.
Guren has also been great. He can be a real pain in the ass at times, but he's
never neglected me. After Mahiru died he, of course, went into a state of
depression for a bit, but tried to keep up a front most of the time. He
continued to tease me and would make smart ass comments while making sure I was
taken care of. I can still tell that these last few years have been hard for
him without her.”
"I'm sorry for the death of your foster mother. I would have liked to meet
her," Mika replied with sympathy. Even though it had only been a few years,
Mika could tell that Yuu had sincerely cared for this woman and respected her.
Yuu let out a light-hearted laugh as he looked down into his cup. "Yeah She
probably would have liked you, being a goody two shoes and all". After a couple
seconds of silence, Yuu stretched out his arms and proclaimed "Anyways all is
well now,” as he gave a cheerful grin.
Mika was pleased with the fact Yuu was able to cheer back up pretty quick,
trying to stay strong. It was an improvement from the young Yuu that would
complain and dwell on things that made him upset.
Not a minute later a jingling of bells caught their attention which ended up
being Shihou Kimizuki with two plates in his hands. He set the respective
plates in front of each person. "Enjoy," he mumbled. "And by the way, dumbass,
remember you're on shift 4:00 to 9:00 tomorrow"
"Yeah yeah," Yuu grumbled as he stuffed his face with pizza.
Once Kimizuki was gone, Mika asked, "You work here, Yuu?"
"Yup. I work part time. I usually do deliveries,” Yuu replied with his mouth
full.
"You really shouldn't talk with your mouth full,” Mika scolded.
"Then you shouldn't ask me questions while I’m eating,” Yuu pointed out, again
while his mouth was still stuffed.
Mika rolled his eyes and then took a bite of his own pizza. It was really good,
just as Yuu had said before. It wasn't as good as some of the pizza Mika had
had while he was up in New York, but it was definitely better than average and
hit the spot after a long, lunchless day at school. While Mika was in the
middle of his second slice, his phone went off. He swallowed what he was
chewing quickly and glanced at the caller ID. It was his mom. Mika had forgot
to inform her that he would be coming home late. She was probably worried sick.
He cursed under his breath and then answered the phone.
"Hello?"
"Mika! Are you okay? Where are you? Did you need to stay at school late? The
bus came but you weren't on it. Do I need to come pick you up?"
"I'm sorry mom. I forgot to text you. I'm with a friend. He invited me to hang
out after school."
"Oh thank god.” She breathed a sigh of relief. “I thought you had been kidnaped
for a minute there. You've just never gone and done something without texting
me before. It's nice that you met a friend though. Just come home soon. You
still need to put some of your furniture together and I'm sure you have
homework. Do I need to pick you up?"
Mika put a hand to his phone and asked Yuu, "Hey does my mom need to pick me
up?" Yuu shook his head and then mumbled with a piece of crust in his mouth,
"I'll take you home."
Mika uncovered the phone, "Yuu says he can take me home."
"Yuu? Isn't that the name of your friend from the orphanage? The one you
couldn't stop talking about when we first picked you up?"
A brush of red made its way onto Mika's cheeks. "Yup that's the one. Anyways
I'll see you later mom."
"Alright see you. Be safe."
And with that, he hung up his phone and shoved it into his pocket. "Are you
cool with taking me home after this? My mom has some furniture she wants help
moving and is also paranoid about me doing my homework."
"Sure no problem. I'll just need your address to put in the GPS."
Yuu finished eating his crust and took out his phone. He fiddled with it and
then gave it to Mika. It was the map app that was open with the destination
address bar highlighted. Mika typed the address in and then slide the phone
over to Yuu. He was about to continue to devour his last slice when he noticed
some sauce on Yuu's cheek.
"Yuu."
"Hmm?" The boy looked up from his phone that he had been messing around with.
He looked up to find Mika hovering over the table, napkin in hand.
"Hold still," Mika ordered as he wiped off the excess sauce from Yuu's cheek.
When he pulled away, Mika noticed Yuu's face was bright red, which caused him
to realize what he had just done. Mika felt his face warm up as a he spouted
out, "S-sorry. Force of habit"
"Oh no no. It's okay. Just caught me off guard is all," Yuu countered as he
grinned, try to make the situation less awkward.
Yuu has always been a messy eater. Mika used to often take it upon himself to
make sure that his face was clean and that the area where he had just enjoyed
his meal was not a total mess. Even though Mika had taken care of Yuu like this
many times before, this time felt different. It's probably because they're
older and it's embarrassing now? Or is there another reason? Mika didn't have
long to dwell on the matter because he remembered that he needed to finish his
pizza. Yuu was already long done and he didn’t want to keep him waiting. He
quickly scarfed down the rest of his pizza and then got up. Yuu got up as well
and then led them to his truck where they both hopped inside. Yuu meddled with
his phone and struggled to stick it on a clip attached to his dashboard, all
while muttering a few curse words here and there. He eventually managed to fit
it in and then began to drive off. There was an awkward silence once again,
aside from the electronic voice giving instructions.
"Thanks for the pizza," said Mika, trying to break the silence.
"No problem."
More silence passed until Mika spoke up again. "You should show me some more
places sometime."
"Oh yeah definitely. There's this ice cream parlor that makes fantastic ice
cream with so many unusual flavors. Like some of them sound like they shouldn’t
be ice cream. There’s also a burger joint that makes the cheesiest
cheeseburgers. And if you're looking for something other than food, there's
this park where you can really see the stars-"
“Be prepared to take the second right,” the electronic voice demanded as it
rudely interrupted Yuu.
“Was that really necessary Siri?” Yuu glared at the device as Mika laughed,
amused with Yuu’s childlike reaction which earned him a glare of his own.
Once Mika recovered from his laughter, he proclaimed, “You’ve got to take me to
all these places if they're so amazing."
"Oh I will. You can't live here without experiencing all these wonders."
Not a second after the electronic voice blurted out, and at a better moment
this time, "You have reached your destination."
"Is this the place?" They were stopped in front of a high-end looking three
story house with a large fenced in yard, two car garage, and a moving van in
the driveway with a handful of men unloading it.
"Yup that’s the one.”
"Dannnnggg. That house is huge!"
"That's what happens when your foster dad helps to create a drug that is now
used widely around the world."
"You gotta bring me inside sometime," Yuu suggested with a huge grin full of
genuine joy. Mika had missed seeing that grin and couldn't help returning it.
"Once we finish moving in, I'll make sure to invite you over."
"Sweet!"
Mika grabbed his bag and began to exit the vehicle. "Thanks again Yuu. This
evening was really fun. Actually, this has probably been the best first day of
school I've had yet."
"Well I'm glad it was awesome."
"See you tomorrow," Mika said as he hopped onto the concrete.
"See you then."
Mika shut the door and began to walk along the driveway until the sound of a
window being rolled down and Yuu's voice caught his attention.
“Mika!” Yuu shouted loud enough so that he was sure that even his foster mom
could hear from inside the house. The said boy turned to look back at the one
who had called his name. “I meant to ask you earlier but umm can I get your
number?”
Mika stifled a laugh as he made his way back over to the truck. “Sure.”
Yuu handed him his phone and he filled out a new contact page. He punched in
his number and then filled in his name, putting a smiley face emoji next to it.
He handed the phone back to Yuu and he snorted.
“I wouldn’t have taken you as an emoji type of guy.”
Mika shrugged as Yuu struggled to put his phone back into the clip on his
dashboard.
“Once I’m home I’ll text you so you can have mine.”
“Got it.”
With that, Yuu rolled up the window and Mika turned to walk back towards his
house. Mika greeted his mom, told her a few things about his day, and then
headed up to his room. Once there, he plopped his backpack next to his yet-to-
be-put-together desk and then flopped on to his bed. Today had felt surreal.
The blond haired boy could not believe his luck. Not only did he find Yuu, he
was able to hangout with him after school! And to think Yuu was the one to talk
to him first. Mika got out his phone to make sure he would receive Yuu’s
message when it came. Mika couldn’t help himself from grinning like an idiot as
he took the time to relish in what had just happened. A few minutes passed and
Mika decided that he really should get a start on his homework. He got out his
copy of Brave New World and began to read. He wasn’t even half way through the
third page when his phone went off. Revealed was a simple text that Mika had
been waiting for
Yuu: Hey mika its yuu :)
Mika saved the number and made then typed out his reply.
Mika: Hi Yuu! I’ve saved your number :D
Shortly after, he got a reply
Yuu: Good! B)
Mika smiled and even though he wanted to keep talking, but he knew he needed to
continue his homework so he went back to reading his book. About ten minutes
later and several chapters in, he got another text.
Yuu: Also mak sure u actully cum 2 lunch tomorrow! Kick dat teach in the balls
2 if u have to!
Mika blurted out laughing. Yuu seemed to always know what to say or do to make
him laugh.
Mika: I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Not a second passed when he began to type out another message.
Mika: Also you misspelled “make” and “actually”. Also I don't think you meant
that form of “come”. Gosh Yuu you really need to work on your spelling.
Chapter Summary
     Mika finally gets to meet all of Yuu's friends.
Chapter Notes
     I'm sorry this is so late. Between Christmas, New Years, and an anime
     convention I've been pretty busy. Time has definitely flown. Anyways
     I hope you guys like it!
For once in a long time, Mika was able to get out of bed actually feeling eager
to get to school despite only obtaining five hours of sleep. He spent most of
the night finishing up homework and arguing with Yuu about his spelling through
text. Yesterday had been long and exhausting but also lots of fun. He happily
went through the motions of his morning routine and then rushed to the bus
stop, making it there five minutes early. Mika took off his heavy backpack and
got out his phone to shed some time. He clicked on his screen and found a text.
It was from Yuu and was delivered about ten minutes ago, probably while Mika
was eating breakfast.
Yuu: Good morning gramar nazi. have any spelling related dreams
Mika quickly texted back.
Mika: Good morning sunshine. Sadly I did not. Surprised that you're up this
early.
It wasn't ten seconds after when Mika's phone began to vibrate.
Yuu: I normally get up around now or more like guren gits up & decides i need 2
wake up 2. Any ways i wanted to make sure u remmember 2 come 2 lunch
Mika: I promise I'll be there. No matter what. Also we'll see each other 1st
period.
Yuu:Its not the saammmeeeee mrs. hanayori iz such a buz kill. :( also i want u
2 meat my friends
Mika: You know you should really be paying attention in class.
Yuu: Yeah yeah still make sure u cum 2 lunch. >:T
Mika: Don't worry I told you I wouldn't miss it for the world. :)
Yuu: Good :D
Mika shoved his phone back into his pocket as he smiled to himself. The
squeaking of the breaks in the distance announced the nearing of the bus. Mika
grabbed hold of his backpack and boarded the bus. He sat down and went through
the past messages he just exchanged with Yuu. The shouting of a ninth grader
and the bus hitting a pothole couldn't erase the smile that was plastered on
his face.
                                     ~ ~ ~
"Mika!"
Mika turned around to see Yuu rushing towards him. Mika had just gotten off the
bus and was making his way to the entrance of the school. It seemed Yuu had
just arrived as well. He slung an arm around Mika once he neared.
“What a great coincidence that we ran into each other on this lovely morning.”
Mika felt a light blush make its way upon his cheeks with the sudden contact.
“I honestly thought you wouldn’t be here until till the beginning of class,”
Mika jokingly replied as the two stumbled to the entrance.
Yuu removed his arm once they were at the entrance to the building.
“You really should give me more credit,” Yuu grumbled.
Mika snickered and made his way to his locker as Yuu followed close behind.
Mika gathered his things as the two made small talk as they made their way to
class. Shihou Kimizuki was already inside. Head on desk and fast asleep. Yuu
walked right up and punched him in the shoulder.
“Wake the hell up Kimiasski. Time for class.”
The pink hair boy grumbled as he lifted his head to look at the perpetrator to
his peaceful slumber. “What the hell was that for Yuuichirou Shityakuya.”
The two argued back and forth as Mika got ready for class. Mika really wished
Yuu wouldn’t pick fights, but the two seemed close so he figured Yuu wasn’t in
any real danger. He had to admit it was nice to see the gleeful look on Yuu’s
face as he teased Kimizuki. Mika had missed seeing that face. He couldn’t deny
that he was slightly jealous that the other boy was able to produce that
expression from his beloved childhood friend. He would give anything to
personally be the one to make Yuu smile like that again. As soon as this
thought crossed his mind, he remembered yesterday. Yesterday he was able to
bring joy to the hot headed boy and that pleased Mika. He wanted to make Yuu
smile like that all the time.
While Mika dwelled on these thoughts, Mrs. Hanayori walked into the room,
signaling that class was just about ready to begin.
                                     ~ ~ ~
Class was pretty similar to yesterday, minus the middle school level passing of
notes. Mika payed more attention to class this time and was even able to
participate in discussions having caught up with the rest of the class. Every
once in awhile he was able to catch stolen glances at Yuu, who looked bored or
at least in his own little world, yet completed the work unlike the day before.
Once the bell rang to announce the end of the first class of the day, Mika
began packing up and getting ready for the next. Yuu packed quickly and then
called out to Mika before exiting the room. "Yo Mika! Remember to be at lunch!"
At first Mika found Yuu's persistence kind of sweet, but now it was getting a
bit annoying. Even so he responded with a kind smile. "Yeah yeah. I'll be
there. I promise."
                                     ~ ~ ~
A few classes and several hours later, it was time for the long awaited lunch.
Mika practically bolted out of the classroom seconds after that long awaited
bell played it's single note that was music to his ears. He dashed down the
hallway without looking back. He had one goal in mind and that was to make it
to the soccer field where he would be having lunch with Yuu and his friends.
Thankfully, Mika was able to make it out the doors without being stopped by any
flamboyant lunatic teachers that liked to mess with new kids. He wandered over
to the soccer field in search of familiar faces though he didn’t find any. Only
seconds had passed when he heard his name being called. Yuu and the guy from
Latin neared, both with lunch in hand.
“I’m glad you made it! Any particular Latin teacher give you any trouble?” Yuu
proclaimed as he stood next to Mika.
“Thankfully he was not in sight,” Mika said with a sigh of relief, “Also, how
couldn't I come after all that pestering you were doing,” Mika added with a
teasing tone.
A slight blush came to Yuu’s cheeks, “W-whatever. Anyways let's go sit down.
I’m sure the others will be here soon”. Yoichi snickered which earned him an
elbow in the side. They sat down at a decently sized picnic table with Yuu and
Mika on one side and Yoichi on the other.
It didn’t take long for the rest of Yuu’s friends to show up which consisted of
Kimizuki, which was predictable, and two girls. One of them was the girl from
English who had commented on his last name. The other was a petite girl with
long blonde pigtails. Mika felt like he’d seen her before but was not sure
where, though Mika didn’t have long to dwell on the manor.
The girl with lavender hair from English sat next to Mika and directed all of
her attention towards him, “So we finally get to meet the notorious Mikaela.
We’ve heard a lot about you from Yuu here. Yesterday he kept going on and on-”
“Hey everyone should introduce themselves! How about we start with you
Kimizuki!”
Kimizuki looked up with his usual annoyed expression. “I’m sure the guy already
knows who the hell I am by now.”
“Well I guess you’re right. For once. Umm then how about Yoichi? No wait you
guys know eachother too. Then Mitsuba.”
The blonde girl directed her gaze over to Mika as she lazily muched on a french
fry. “I’m Mitsuba Sangu. I’m pretty sure you’re in my gym class.”
So that’s where he had seen her before.
“Alright so I guess that leaves me!” Yuu unhappily groaned as the girl swiftly
turned to Mika and clapped her hands together. “I’m Shinoa Hiragi! I have
English with you, which you probably already know. Sorry I wasn’t very social
this morning. Had to catch up on the reading if you know what I mean.” She took
a bite of her hamburger and waved it as she proclaimed, “You may not know much
about us, but we know a lot about you. Ever since I’ve met this cherry boy five
years ago he’s been spouting ‘Mika this’ and ‘Mika that’. You’re basically a
celebrity.”
“So true! He always brings up stories about his life with Mika and his family
from the orphanage,” Yoichi chimed in.
Kimizuki added, “And he’s always been waiting for you to come back, acting like
some shitty Disney princess waiting for her Prince-”
“S-shut up! All of you!” Yuu shouted, face beet red with embarrassment.
Everyone laughed, including Mika, which made Yuu even redder.
It made Mika oddly happy and relieved to know that Yuu had told his friends
about him. It was almost as if Mika had been in Yuu’s new life even though
they’ve been apart. The news caused Mika to laugh along with the others with
joy and a warm feeling in his stomach.
***** Birthday *****
Chapter Summary
     Somebody's birthday is coming up.
Chapter Notes
     Here starts the beginning of some more excitement in Mika's young
     life!
Several days have passed since Mika enjoyed the long awaited lunch with Yuu and
his friends. It was now Friday afternoon and for Mika, the week could not have
gone by any faster. It had been one of the best weeks in Mika’s young life and
he was not eager for it to end. Even so, he was excited for the weeks ahead.
The weeks that would be filled with him being by Yuu’s side.
Mika leisurely walked into the Latin classroom to find Yoichi reading a book
alone. He quietly took the seat next to him and began to get out his things
before Yuu arrived. Yuu usually came over to their desks and chatted with the
two of them before class. He was in the middle of opening up his textbook to
the desired page when Yoichi spoke up.
“Hey, do you know what you’re going to get Yuu for his birthday yet?”
Mika paused and stared at Yoichi in horror. Through all of the excitement of
this past week, Mika had almost forgotten about Yuu’s sixteenth birthday. Mika
always remembered the day, October sixteenth, but did not really have time to
acknowledge how close it was, let alone getting a present. He hasn't had to get
him a present in years.
“We’re going to hold a surprise party at Yuu’s house next Friday. You’re more
than welcome to join us. I talked to Guren and he gave me a spare key. He’s
taking Yuu to do his driving test after school so we’ll have plenty of time to
set up”
Mika did not have much time to contemplate his answer since right at that
moment, Yuu had walked in.
“Hey guys! What ya talking about?”
“Hey Yuu! We were just discussing last night's homework,” Yoichi smoothly
replied.
“As expected from you nerds”
Soon enough, class began and Mika found his mind wandering to the subject of
what to get Yuu for his birthday. They’d been separated for years and so he was
not really all that sure of Yuu’s interests. Of course he knew all there is to
know about his habits and what he used to like when they were kids, but he was
sure that things had changed. Within the past week, most of what he learned was
that he was very excited about getting his license and that he occasionally
played games on his phone in class. That didn’t really help him much. He
guessed he could get some sort of accessory for his truck. But what? A bumper
sticker. Of what? And wouldn’t that be too simple? He then started to think of
phone accessories, but drew to a blank on that idea as well. He continued to
dwell on the subject till the end of the class.
                                     ~ ~ ~
It was now Saturday afternoon and Mika was laying around in bed. It was his
first real Saturday back in his hometown. He should be out doing fun things, or
a least helping to finish the last of the unpacking. But instead, he is loafing
around, still contemplating Yuu’s gift. He scrolled through his phone looking
through Amazon. Trying to pick out something. After another five unsuccessful
minutes, Mika came up with an idea. He has no idea why he didn’t think of it
sooner.
He should try asking Yuu’s friends about his current interests. He hated to
admit it, but they would know better than himself. Within the past week, Mika
had obtained the numbers of two others besides Yuu. Those numbers would be
Yoichi’s and Shinoa’s. Yoichi gave him his when they were in Latin at one
point, mainly just in case he had troubles with homework. Shinoa typed in her
number when she got a hold of his phone at lunch a couple days ago. She didn’t
really give reasoning for it. She just handed his phone back with a slight
smirk. Since he still didn’t know Shinoa all that well, he decided to text
Yoichi.
Mika: Hey. Can I get your input on something?
It took less than a minute for the other boy to reply.
Yoichi: sure. whats up?
Mika: I’m trying to figure out what to get Yuu for his birthday. Do you know
what Yuu likes? Like does he have any hobbies?
Yoichi: ummm well I know he likes xbox games. though he doesnt have a
particular taste. he mainly just plays whatever people give him. i got him an
old fighting game that hes been playing at my place for a few months now.
Mika had contemplated video games before. Though at the time he didn’t know
what consoles he had, if any. Plus he has no idea what games he already owns.
Also, Mika did not play video games often enough to know what was good and what
sucked.
Mika: Is there anything else? I don’t know much about video games outside of
Nintendo and Call of Duty.
Yoichi: not much that i can think of off the top of my head. im sure he would
be happy with whatever you give him so dont worry about it too much.
The conversation ended there. Mika groaned as he tossed his phone onto his bed.
He was thankful for Yoichi’s help, but he still felt at a loss.
Two light knocks resonated throughout the room. Mika sat up in bed as his door
opened.
“Mika are you up? You know it’s passed noon sweetheart.” A middle-aged woman
with recently dyed brown hair and a kind face entered the room. This was Mika’s
adopted mother. She was a compassionate woman that was loving and strict when
it came to academics. She always made sure that Mika knew he was loved and Mika
was thankful that she and her husband had chosen him to become a member of
their family.
“Sorry I lost track of time,” Mika reasoned as he slowly made his way out of
bed.
“Well, that’s understandable. You did have a busy week. I just wanted to make
sure that you don’t waste the day away. You still need to unpack and I wouldn’t
be surprised if you still have work you need to catch up on”
“I know, I know. I’ll get dressed and then get to work”
                                     ~ ~ ~
It didn’t take long for Mika to finish unpacking. Though when it was time to
work on school work, Mika found his mind wandering back to the same subject
from before. Realizing that he was getting nothing done, Mika got up and made
his way down into the kitchen to grab a snack.
While snooping through the fridge, his phone began to vibrate in his back
pocket. He grabbed a pudding cup and checked his phone. It was a text from Yuu.
Yuu: hey mika wats up?
Seeing Yuu’s simple text caused a lightbulb to go off in Mika’s head. He did
not want to have to resort to it, but he was all out of ideas.
Mika: Hey. Is now an okay time to call?
Mika knew he was being pretty direct but he really wanted to solve his dilemma.
Yuu: umm sure. give me a sec & ill call u
Mika grabbed a spoon and headed off to his room. He plopped down on his bed and
his phone started to vibrate seconds later. Mika picked up his phone.
"Hello?"
"Hey Mika. So what did you want to talk about?"
“Alright umm this might be a bit awkward to ask but umm…What do you want for
your birthday?”
Yuu was quiet for a second and then broke out in uncontrollable laughter.
Mika’s face became hot with embarrassment. What was so funny?
Yuu's laughter subsided. "Is that all you wanted to ask me? I thought something
terrible was going on by how sudden your text was."
"W-well umm I was just...I just have no idea what to get you. I kept trying to
think of things but nothing seemed right." Mika tried to explain nervously.
"I get that. Hmmm let me think."
The line went quiet for a minute and Mika waited in anticipation.
"I know!" Yuu exclaimed suddenly. "How about we go to a movie Saturday? There's
this one action flick I've been dying to see since I've seen the previews. Of
course you would be paying for everything."
Mika let out a sigh of relief. "Yeah that sounds great. What time?"
"Hmmm how about five? Also I'll pick you up cause guess who'll have his license
by theeennnn."
Mika rolled his eyes. "Of course, of course. Yeah that sounds awesome."
"Great! I'll be looking forward to it!"
"Great. See you then."
Chapter Summary
     Who's ready for a birthday party?
Chapter Notes
     Alright this chapter's short but the next one will be quite a bit
     longer since it will be Mika's present to Yuu. The two boys will have
     their moment but there has to be a party with the squad first.
The second week flew by. Mika had adjusted to life at his new school quite
well. He found himself enjoying his classes, even Latin if he ignored Mr.
Bathory. Also he found himself getting closer to Yuu's friends, especially with
the surprise party preparations coming up. Mika now had the numbers of the rest
of Yuu's friends and they'd been group chatting for the past several nights
over what decorations to buy, what food to bring, and who was going to bring
what. Mika enjoyed Yuu's friends and he could tell they cared a lot about him,
but he still could not help being jealous of how close they were to Yuu. Right
now, they were the ones that knew Yuu the best and Mika only really had
childhood memories. Of course he was jealous. Though at the same time, that
only made Mika more determined to learn more about his childhood friend and
want to spend even more time with him.
Once Friday came, Yuu could barely contain his excitement. Guren may have been
letting him drive without a license, but Yuu was still excited to finally drive
legally. He practically bolted out the door when the final bell rang, only
yelling a quick goodbye to his friends as he left the classroom. Once they were
sure Yuu was off school grounds, Mika and Yoichi made their way over to the
student parking lot to hitch a ride with Kimizuki over to Yuu's place.
When they arrived at Yuu's, they had about two hours to set up and thankfully
Guren was nice enough to promise to give them a heads up if they were going to
be earlier or later. They all quickly got to work covering the first floor in
cheap, generic decorations. They put up a paperboard "Happy Birthday” banner
that hung above the kitchen table, colorful streamers that were put up all
around, they blew up about twenty balloons that would migrate wherever they
pleased, and even put up a piñata in the backyard, which happened to be Elsa
from Frozen courtesy of Shinoa. Everyone had on party hat and held a blow out,
ready to surprise Yuu when he walked in. They turned off all of the lights and
hid behind various furniture.
It felt weird to Mika being in Yuu's house without him being there, especially
since it was his first time in the home. Though it was interesting to see the
place that Yuu had been living in for the past few years. It was small and a
bit messy, but it had a homey feel to it. It was nice.
About twenty minutes passed and everyone was getting impatient. Shinoa kept
checking her phone and quietly exclaimed, "Where the hell is he? He was suppose
to be back around five. Don't tell me he-" She was cut off by the sound of a
car coming into the driveway. "Finally. Alright everyone get ready!"
The front door clicked open and Yuu bounces inside with Guren trailing behind.
He flicks on the lights and is immediately startled and awestruck by the group
that jumps out at him yelling "Surprise!" and creating a bunch of annoying
noise from their blow outs mixed with various sounds of excitement.
After recovering from shock and amusement, Yuu proceeded to brag about his
driver's certificate and made sure everyone got a good look at it, including
Mika, exclaiming that he had no excuse to tear off his armrest anymore.
Afterwards, everyone made Yuu open their presents. First was Kimizuki, who had
gotten him a simple black wallet and simply stated it was because his current
one "looked like it had been run over by a herd of cattle and then shitted on."
Next was Mitsuba who shyly handed over a generic "Happy Birthday" bag full of
Yuu's favorite candy. After that was Shinoa, who first handed him a pink card
with feathers and glitter attached, and was initially intended for a little
princess who would be turning six with a one scribbled in front of the glittery
number. Yuu was about to kill her until she handed over his actually gift. It
was a simple forest green dress shirt and black tie. Yuu looked at Shinoa with
a questioning look and she leaned over and whispered something in Yuu's ear,
which made his cheeks turn red as he mumbled curse words under his breath. Mika
felt a pang of jealousy, but it didn't last long for it was Yoichi' turn to
give Yuu a gift which of course was the video game that Yuu had previously
shown interest in.
After thanking Yoichi, Yuu looked over at Mika and exclaimed, "I'm looking
forward to my gift tomorrow!" with a big grin plastered on his face.
Mika returned the grin with one just as wide.
Next they sang "Happy Birthday," ate cake, beat up Elsa, exclaiming that “it's
time to fucking let it go already”, and then played the game Yoichi had bought
for the rest of the night. Mika was having fun, but he could not wait until
tomorrow. Just thinking about tomorrow filled Mika with nervous excitement.
                                     ~ ~ ~
The next morning, Mika woke up early to work on some homework and work on
something with his mom before his evening with Yuu. He was out pretty late and
was still pretty tired, but it was worth it. Mika would get to spend a whole
evening with Yuu, which he got to do yesterday, but this time it would be just
the two of them. He would have Yuu all to himself. Mika felt his cheeks warm up
with the thought, for some strange reason. The two haven't truly been alone
together since the time they got pizza on his first day of school.
Mika made sure he had his wallet and a warm jacket, due to the mid October
chill that was sure to be in the air, before heading out. He walked down the
hall and checked out his outfit in a nearby mirror, which consisted of a plain
pair of faded skinny jeans and an ordinary long sleeved navy blue shirt, which
would be covered by his generic black hoodie. Mika didn't usually care about
his outfits, but some reason he did today. He felt like he was too plain and
thought about going back up to his room to change, but realized that Yuu would
be at his place at any minute.
He walked outside and sat on the front porch swing as he waited for Yuu. Mika
swung his legs back and forth in a soothing rhythm as a small breeze came by,
capturing several leaves from the maple tree as it passed. He was nervous yet
eager for Yuu to come.
Chapter Summary
     In which Mika pretty much spoils the hell out of Yuu.
Chapter Notes
     Here's what you've all been waiting for! Yuu's birthday "date"! I
     hope you guys like it.
Yuu strolled into Mika’s driveway at five o'clock right on the dot. He
instantly spotted his blonde friend on the front porch who jumped off the swing
he was on once he spotted Yuu’s truck. Yuu checked out his outfit, which
consisted of a red graphic t which a black faux leather jacket and black skinny
jeans, feeling self conscious about it for some reason, and got out and walked
up to the other teen grinning ear to ear.
“I can’t wait to receive my birthday gift. I’m sure it’s going to be pretty
sweet!” Yuu couldn’t help but admit that he had been waiting for this day ever
since that weird phone call. Mika being stuck on what to get him for his
birthday was the last thing he had expected when he had gotten the abrupt text.
By how sudden it was, Yuu assumed that Mika had been kidnaped or had gotten his
hand stuck in a jar of pickles, which sadly has happened to Yuu before.
Mika smiled back. "Well I'm glad Birthday boy. I hope it will be one to
remember.”
They both hopped into Yuu’s truck and made small talk, mostly about the party
last night and the movie they were going to watch, while Yuu drove them over to
the local theater which was not too far from Mika’s house.
The theater was pretty empty so they had a great selection of seats and decided
to sit in the middle of the back row and it took them a bit to get situated due
to the crazy amount of snacks Yuu had ordered. He had gotten Butterfingers,
M&M’s, a small pizza, an Icee, and a large popcorn. When he would go to the
movies with Guren or his friends, he would ask for all these snacks and
sometimes more and would always get denied. He would be allowed some popcorn
and some candy and occasionally an Icee, but never two candies and a pizza as
well! He was surprised Mika had agreed to get it all for him. Mika had gotten a
medium soda and some gummy bears for himself. Yuu wanted to tease him about the
gummy bears with them being little kids would normally get and all, but he held
back since he didn't want to anger him after he had just bought him a crap load
of food.
“I figured you'd get a lot of junk but there’s no way in hell I would have
expected you to get that much. Are you seriously going to eat it all?” Mika
asked as he leaned back in his chair and started to open up his gummy bears.
“I'm a growing boy you know! Plus you agreed to get me what I want.”
“I know. I know.”
Yuu first consumed his pizza in record time, before the previews were even
shown, and then immediately started on his Butterfingers. He was halfway
through them when the lights began to dim and the trailers began to roll. The
trailers weren't that interesting and Yuu didn't pay much attention to them,
save for one about a sequel of a film he had seen before, and continued to eat
away at his pile of goodies. The Butterfingers were long gone once the actual
movie began to play and Yuu was now onto his tub of popcorn. He continued to
shovel popcorn into his mouth as the movie played.
The movie was an action flick about a vampire apocalypse with the humans
fighting for freedom. The beginning started off pretty slow with mostly back
story, but the action quickly picked up, which thrilled Yuu. He was so into the
on screen fight that barely noticed the hand that brushed up against his own.
He jumped and looked over at the boy beside him.
“Wha-”
“I bought it so I should be allowed to have some,” Mika whispered as he
continued to grab a handful.
“W-whatever”
They continued to watch the movie while sharing the popcorn. Yuu moved the tub
so it would be in between them so Mika wouldn't have to reach over too far. The
teen wasn't sure why, but he couldn't help but feel butterflies fill his
stomach whenever their fingers would brush up against one another. Mika’s
touches were much different than anyone else's and they always have been. His
touches made him nervous, yet they were not unpleasant. They were oddly
comforting and made him yearn for more. At first he believed it was due to
their separation for several years, but he’s recently decided that's probably
not the case.
At some point in the film where the main character and his group of friends
were having an emotional heart to heart, Yuu took the chance to look over at
Mika who had just grabbed another handful of popcorn. The teen was very into
the on screen conversation as he munched. It was probably plot related but Yuu
was not all that interested. He was more interested in the way the other boys
blue eyes shined in the glow of the screen and how handsome he was even in the
dim light. Yuu’s always found Mika attractive, even as kids, but for some
reason he's discovered him to be even more so within the past two weeks. He
couldn't help but stare at the back of Mika's head while they were in class.
Watching the way his soft blond waves would sway when he turned and how he
would bounce his pencil lightly against his soft cheeks when deep in thought.
Mika was just too damn enchanting sometimes. Yuu had accepted himself to be
bisexual a while back in middle school but that was beside the point. He
realized that he had been staring for far too long and then forced his
attention back to the screen.
                                     ~ ~ ~
“Man Mika that was so rad. Did you see the way those limbs got ripped off?” Yuu
exclaimed once they had exited the theater.
“Did you pay any attention to the plot?”
“Well uh of course! I just like the action scenes the best!” Yuu defended.
“Riggghhhttt,” Mika replied as he rolled his eyes. “Also I see that your eyes
were bigger than your stomach.” He stated, pointing at the bag of M&M’s in
Yuu’s hand.
“Well uh yeah umm I was planning to share these with you all along. We can go
eat them and hang out at the arcade near by. I’ll even pay for a few games,”
Yuu used as an excuse. He could have been imagining it, but he swore he saw a
slight blush on Mika’s cheeks, which caused his to redden as well.
“I'm sure that was just an excuse but it sounds fun though.” Mika bumped Yuu’s
shoulder with his own and laughed. Yuu felt the butterflies return and laughed
along with him as they walked across the parking lot to begin their next
endeavor.
                                     ~ ~ ~
The arcade wasn't that far and it took less than three minutes for Yuu to drive
over. It was a small little hole in the wall that looked as though it had
originally been built in the mid 80’s with it’s neon signs and outdated games.
When they first entered, they started off playing classic Pac-Man. Yuu came up
with idea for them to basically battle against each other to see who got the
better score and winner would get first dibs on the M&M’s. Yuu went first,
wanting to show off his skills and had no doubt in his mind that he would win.
Though he did not anticipate that Mika might have more experience than he had
originally thought, which resulted in him getting his ass handed to him. Mika
opened up the bag and took a couple of the colored candies and snacked on them
until they decided on what would be next, which ended up being a Japanese
fighting game by the name of Double Dragon. They agreed that they would play
together and whoever lived the longest or had the highest score would be
pronounced the winner. Mika died pretty quick, leaving Yuu as the winner. He
started celebrating but stopped when something caught his eye. Yuu’s attention
was caught by the Claw Machine that was on the other side of the arcade.
Looking at the machine reminded him of back when they were young kids at the
orphanage. On a special occasion, the orphanage took all of the kids to a local
pizza parlor and inside was a Claw Machine. Each kid was given fifty cents each
to play though no one really played themselves. They all just had Mika play for
them. Mika was a freaking wiz when it came to those machines and had almost a
one hundred percent success rate. All the kids would line up and ask for big
brother Mika to win them a prize. At the time, Yuu watched on in awe as Mika
would move the crane to the exact location that was perfect for snatching up
the plush and carrying it towards the dropbox where it could be retrieved.
Mika’s skills made Yuu jealous and so when it was finally Yuu’s turn, he
childishly pushed Mika out of the way and tried to get one of the plush animals
himself. Needless to say, he failed miserably and ended up being the only child
stuff animal less.
“What are you looking at Yuu?” Mika asked getting a little too close to Yuu in
order to see what he was looking at.
Yuu jumped and a blush once again began to form on his cheeks.
“O-oh ummm. Remember back when we were at the orphanage and you used to be
super rad at those claw machines?”
“Hmmm. Oh yeah I remember. You want me to win you a prize?” Mika asked with a
playful look on his face. “I remember last time you were stubborn and lost and
everyone poked fun at you about it for weeks.”
“Shut up,” Yuu exclaimed, hiding his face yet making his way towards the
machine. “How about this. We both play and the first one to win a plush get the
rest of the M&M’s.”
“Sounds fair.” Mika simply replied.
Yuu went first. He managed to target an easy looking plush rabbit. It was a
cream colored rabbit with a small cape and tiny fangs, probably meet to be
dressed as vampire. All of the plushies were halloween themed animals due to
the holiday drawing near. He aimed the claw over it and managed to grab on to
the stuffed animal but it slipped from its grip in a matter of seconds. Yuu
yelled out in agony as he reluctantly handed the machine over to Mika. Mika
decided to target the same stuffed rabbit and managed to swiftly claim it with
ease.
“Whaaa? How?” Yuu managed to stutter out in disbelief.
“It takes talent my friend. You have to be born with it.” He reached over Yuu
and grabbed the M&M’s that were held loosely in his hand. “I'll be taking
those.” He then handed the rabbit over to Yuu. “And this is for you. Happy
Birthday.”
Yuu looked down at the bunny that had been placed in his hands and then back up
at Mika and down at the bunny again. At first he was mad, then confused and
then felt oddly touched. “I-it's not the manliest present in the world but
thank you,” he mumbled as he rubbed the bunny’s ears and felt its softness.
Mika giggled and stated, “Well I didn’t think you were all that manly to begin
with Yuu.”
Yuu felt his cheeks warm up and was about to yell at Mika for saying such until
he saw the look in his eyes. Mika's had a gentle smile and his eyes were soft
and focused on Yuu in a way that made Yuu feel drawn in and put him in a
trance. He stared for a while, trapped with thinking only of how much he loved
that look and how he wanted Mika to look at him like that forever, but looked
away once he got back to his senses. Why the hell did Mika have to have such
enchanting eyes?
They agreed that it would be a good idea to end their adventure there and left
the arcade to make the trip back to Mika's house. The ride back was quiet, yet
it was a comfortable form of quiet with the two both lost in thought while
enjoying each other’s company.
They pulled up into Mika's driveway and Yuu parked his truck. Yuu was prepared
to give a quick goodbye and drive off but Mika had other plans.
“Well, I'm pretty sure that you’re probably stuffed from all of the junk food,
but I have another present for you.”
“Another present? What is it?” Yuu perked up and was very curious to what Mika
was up to. Did Mika really have another present or was he just pulling his leg?
“You’ll see. Come sit on the porch swing and I’ll bring it out.”
They did just that. Yuu sat on the swing, rocking in anticipation, as Mika went
inside the house to fetch his gift. It didn't take long for Mika to reappear
with a small strawberry cake in his hands and two sets of silverware.
“I felt like it didn't feel right just having the movie be your only present,
though I would have thought differently if I had know that you were going to
eat so much.” He sat the cake down on a small side table by the swing and sat
next to Yuu. “I made it myself with some help from my mom. I hope you like it.”
Yuu was touched. More touched than when Mika gave him the bunny. For one, Mika
felt like just paying for the trip to the movies wasn't enough. Two, Mika baked
him a cake from scratch. Three, how the hell did he find time to do that? And
finally, he remembered that strawberry cake was his favorite. They didn't even
have it at his surprise party! It was true that he was already full from all
the junk he had eaten earlier, but he wasn't going to skip out on eating this
delicious looking cake!
Mika cut two small slices and handed one to Yuu. “I'll let you take the rest
home but I wanted to see your reaction when you try it.”
Yuu wasted no time in taking the slice handed to him and taking his first bite.
Yuu’s eyes lit up as soon as the sweet flavor filled his mouth. The strawberry
taste was perfect, it was just the right amount. The frosting was whipped and
very fluffy. The texture of the cake was nice and spongy. And he even added
real strawberries on top! It was the best cake that Yuu had ever tasted and he
quickly took another bite, not ever wanting the wonderfulness of Mika's cake
leaving his mouth.
“Oh my god Mika this cake is perfect. It's so good!” Yuu exclaimed after his
third bite.
He looked up at Mika’s face that had that glowing smile that Yuu loved oh so
much. He was happy that his complement meant that much to him.
The two finished up their slices and Mika then packed up the cake for Yuu to
take with him. They said their goodbyes, both with huge smiles on their faces,
and Yuu drove off. The whole trip home, Yuu thought about how great the day was
and how this was the best present he had ever received. Also while he drove, he
thoughts were filled with another matter and that matter was that Yuuichirou
Hyakuya definitely had a crush on Mikaela.
Chapter Summary
     What's going on with Yuu?
Chapter Notes
     Hey there! Sorry this is so late. These past few weeks have been
     pretty busy. Also, I realized I forgot to mention that the last
     chapter was in Yuu's point of view, though I'm sure you guys were
     able to figure it out. I'm sorry about that. Anyway, enough about all
     that. Let's see what's going on with Mika and Yuu!
Saturday had been one of the best days in Mika’s young life. He had hoped for
things to go well, but not that well! He had so much fun and seemed to have
successfully kept Yuu happy all evening, and that alone left Mika with joy. He
was also excited about how much Yuu had liked his cake. He had asked his foster
mother to help him make it Thursday evening on a whim. Mika didn't expect her
to be as enthusiastic as she was. The two had worked together to bake it
Saturday morning before he got picked up by Yuu. Mika ended up doing most of
the work while his foster mother gave him direction and make sure that he
didn't screw anything up.
Mika was also quite pleased with the amount of times that he got to see Yuu’s
blushing face. Yuu would kill him if he knew, but he found it cute the way his
face would redden with the smallest remarks and how he would try and hide his
face. Honestly, Mika sometimes looked forward to seeing his blushing,
embarrassed expressions more than the smiles he was so fond of at times. He was
drawn to Yuu and wanted to relive all of the faces he could make, along with
some new ones.
Monday came along and Mika arrived in the English classroom to find Yuu hunched
over Shinoa’s desk, engulfed in hushed conversation. Mika didn't think too much
of it and went up and placed a hand on Yuu's shoulder. Yuu jumped and looked at
over at Mika with wide eyes.
“Uh good morning?” Mika said with a hint of confusion in his tone. He knew that
he said that he wanted to see more of Yuu's expressions, but he wasn't sure if
this was the way to go.
“G-good morning. You’re here early,” Yuu replied nervously.
Mika gave him a questioning look. “I got here the same time I always do.” He
dug his cell phone and clicked on the screen, “See, 7:53am. That's basically
around the time I always get here.”
“Oh uh yeah. My bad. So that means class will be starting soon. I better get to
my seat before Mrs. Hanayori kicks my ass.” Yuu then shuffled over to his desk
and started rummaging through his backpack.
Mika looked over at Shinoa with a questioning look and she just shrugged. He
then made his way to his desk and got ready for class as well.
                                     ~ ~ ~
It’s been three days since Monday and Yuu has been acting strange ever since.
Mika was starting to worry. It was obvious that Yuu was trying to avoid him.
They would pass by in the halls and Yuu would pretend to not to see him, Mika
would try to approach him during class and Yuu would either take part in
awkward small talk, or come up with some abnormal excuse such as needing to
study. At first during lunch, he would at least sit by Mika while rarely
speaking or looking at him, but today he squished himself in between Kimizuki
and Yoichi and was discussing something they saw on TV last night. Mika was
honestly starting to get annoyed. He swore that Yuu looked like he had fun and
didn't seem mad at him Saturday night, so why the hell was he acting this way?
After contemplating for a while, he decided that he would confront Yuu about
it. He was tired of being ignored. His plan was to try and catch Yuu after
Latin and pull him over for a few minutes to talk before he had to get on the
bus. Mika hoped that if he was straightforward and considerate, Yuu might tell
him what was going on. The final bell rang and Mika was ready to put his plan
into action. He already had his things packed and ready to go, so he hopped up
walked up to Yuu’s desk. Yuu was packing up his things and didn't notice his
presence at first.
He place a hand on the other boys desk and called out to him. “Hey Yuu do you
have a minute?”
Yuu practically flew out of his chair and looked at Mika with a flushed face
and shocked expression.
“I uhhh umm.”
Mika was worried and confused. Why was he acting like this? Mika reached out,
attempting to grab onto Yuu when the flustered teen suddenly bolted out of the
classroom as several angry yells about no running in the halls were heard in
the distance.
                                     ~ ~ ~
It's now six in the evening and Mika was currently lying in bed with his copy
of Brave New World spread over his face, having long since given up on reading
it. He’s been so puzzled over what’s going on with Yuu that he can’t even force
himself to concentrate on homework. As he laid there, Mika tried to come up
with ideas that would help him figure out what’s wrong with his childhood
friend. Most of his ideas ended up being dumb or very likely to fail.
The blonde sat up and groaned in frustration as an idea hit him. Well, he
actually thought of it a while back but he really didn’t want to go through
with it. Mika had gotten pretty close to Yuu’s friends with the past three
weeks, but he still didn’t want to rely on them that much. Especially the one
person he had in mind that would help him out the most, and that person was
Shinoa. He’s seen the two talk quite a bit lately so he was pretty sure that
she knew what was going on with the troubled teen. Mika grabbed her phone and
reluctantly typed out a text.
Mika: Hey Shinoa it’s Mika. I was wondering if you would be willing to talk
with me tomorrow?
Mika sent the message and sighed. He hoped that he didn’t seem to weird of
formal. About five minutes later a reply came.
Shinoa: oooh is this going to be some sort of love confession?
Mika blushed out of embarrassment. Did it really sound like that? He sure
didn’t mean for it to be. Honestly, he really didn’t have any interest in
girls, he tended to find himself more attracted to men but he wasn’t ready to
tell anyone that yet.
Mika: No no nothing like that. I was just wondering if you knew anything about
why Yuu’s been ignoring me.
Shinoa: lol i figured that was what you wanted i just wanted to pull ur leg.
meet where we usually eat lunch tomorrow 30min before school starts and bring
coffee. also make sure u add 4 sugar packets.
Mika: Got it. Thanks.
Shinoa: no prob lover boy ;)
Shinoa’s last comment confused Mika and make him blush again. He wondered what
she meant by that. She didn’t still think that he was planning on confessing to
her? He decided to just brush it off, since she tended to say a lot of weird
things like that, and picked up his book again. Now that he felt like he would
get some answers soon, he was now finally able to concentrate on his homework.
                                     ~ ~ ~
The next morning, Mika was able to convince his foster mother to drive him
early to school, though he had to give her the excuse that he needed to go to
Chemistry tutoring. His foster mother questioned the large mug of coffee he
brought with him, but she didn’t question for long to Mika’s relief.
After getting out of the car and waving goodbye to his foster mother, Mika made
his way over to their usual place. He got there and checked his phone for the
time. It was 7:27am, thirty-three minutes till school started. He gently set
the mug down and took a seat. He started playing some game that Yuu was playing
sometime last week at lunch. It was a simple game where the goal was to get the
animal as far as you could across the road. The whole lunch break, Yuu was
glued to his phone and yelled in frustration whenever he would get run over or
fall in the river. He was apparently trying to beat Kimizuki’s record. Mika
later downloaded it on his phone when he came across it in the app store.
“Good Morning,” a voice called from behind him. Mika put down his phone and
turned around. Shinoa was standing behind him, covering her mouth as she
yawned. “Oh is that for me? I didn’t think you’d actually bring it,” she said
while grabbing the mug that was in on the table and making her way to sit
across from him. She took a sip and smiled with satisfaction. “I really needed
that.”
Mika watched as she took a few more drinks and started to wake up a bit. Mika
was getting a little impatient but figured it would probably be better to just
wait for her to start the conversation whenever she felt like it.
“Alright so what to know why our little idiot boy seems to be ignoring you,
correct?” Shinoa asked having finished the coffee and setting the mug down.
Mika nodded, motioning for her to continue.
“Well I promised him that I wouldn’t tell you exactly what was going on but I
will give you some tips.”
Mika looked at her with a dumbfounded expression. Was she really serious?
“Don’t get your panties in a knot. He’ll tell you himself when he’s ready and
the tips I have will help you get his attention again.”
Mika relaxed and decided to listen to what she had to say.
Chapter Summary
     What is Yuu going to do about these newly discovered feelings?
Chapter Notes
     Here's another chapter! This one skips back a little bit and is in
     Yuu's point of view. Enjoy!
Yuuichirou Hyakuya had a crush on Mikaela. That was the only thought that raced
through Yuu’s mind when he got home. He gently placed the home made cake in the
fridge and then ran up stairs and hid under the covers with the stuffed rabbit
Mika had won him. The raven haired boy stared at the plush toy in his hands as
he tried to sort out his thoughts. Did he really like Mika like that? Did he
really have a crush on his childhood friend? It’s true that he found him
attractive. And that he found him to be really cool. And super smart. And he
also got butterflies in his stomach when the blonde boy would smile at him, or
touched him. And it turned him on when he would act mischievous, or when he
licked his fork clean after eating cake.
Yuu ended up blushing like mad and threw the blanket that was covering him to
try and stop his thoughts. He was forced to accept that his crush on Mika was
real and burning with life. But what would he do with his discovery? He
couldn’t just walk up to Mika and be like, Hey I like you, will you go out with
me? That would be too awkward, especially since they’ve only been reunited for
less than a month. Plus he didn’t even know if Mika was even into dudes.
Yuu grabbed a nearby pillow and buried his face in frustration. He sat there in
that position for a few minutes, contemplating what he did in his life to
deserve this conflict. The teen eventually came to the conclusion that he
needed help and he knew exactly who to call. He dug his phone out of his pocket
and searched for the number that was desired then hit call. The other line rang
twice and then was picked up.
“Hey lover boy. How was the date?” The person he had called was Shinoa. She was
always the first to tease him about Mika, even before he discovered these
feelings for himself, and he knew she would help him, even if it meant that he
would have to sit through her pestering.
“It wasn’t a date and it went great. Amazing actually.”
“Hmm well that’s good to hear. So why have you decided to call me out of the
blue? Wait don’t tell me-”
“Shinoa no,” Yuu interjected.
“You’ve finally accepted that you have a crush on Mika! Congratulations! Now
tell me all the deets.”
Yuu sighed in defeat. “Yeah yeah. I have.” He then proceeded to tell her
everything. From the movie to the cake, though leaving out how he stared at
Mika when he was eating popcorn, no one but he and himself needed to know about
that.
After Yuu had finished telling her his tale, she replied, “Awww you too are so
sweet. You’re making my teeth rot out. Forget going out, just go ahead and skip
to marriage.”
“But that's the thing Shinoa. Not the marriage part but the going out part. I
doubt he likes me back or that he’s interested in other guys. Also I just got
him back. I don't want to lose him again.”
“Dude. You two have been friends for years. Hell, you’ve pretty much grown up
together. He’d never hate you. You’d have to stab him in the chest or
something. I doubt he'd really be mad even then. Anyways, my point is that you
have nothing to lose. Go ahead and confess. I have a feeling you’ll like the
result.”
Yuu’s face was bright red by the time she finished. Her words touched him and
gave him hope, yet he still couldn’t deny the pessimistic side he still felt
within on the matter. “Thanks Shinoa but I still don’t think I can confess just
yet. I feel like I still need time.”
“Alright but you better not wait too long or you might scare him away.” Shinoa
stated with slight laughter in her tone.
“Wait what-”
“I’m just saying you should tell him soon before you regret it.” With that she
hung up, leaving the teen to sit there and contemplate what to do.
                                     ~ ~ ~
The next day he got to school a bit earlier and sighed in relief when he saw
there was only Shinoa and a few other students he didn't really care about were
in the classroom. Shinoa was reading back over the assigned chapters, just in
case there was a pop quiz like she tended to do some mornings. He walked up to
the lavender haired girl and slammed his hands on to her desk.
“Hey what's up with you hanging up on me yesterday?” He asked with a slight
pouting expression.
She placed a bookmark between the pages she was reading and then closed her
book. “I did that because there was nothing left to say. Duh,” she replied
matter-of-factly looking up at the boy who was disturbing her studying.
“Well I wasn’t finished talking yet,” Yuu contradicted.
“Oh I’m sorry,” she replied sarcastically, “What is it that you wanted to say?”
She place her face in her hands and looked up at the boy before her, giving him
her undivided attention.
“Well ummm…” Honestly he didn't think he'd get this far.
“Hmm? I haven't got all day?”
“Well I uh don't want to talk about it here. Come with me outside or
something.”
“What’s wrong with here?”
Yuu leaned in closer and spoke more quietly “People could over hear us and
start rumors. Plus Mika could walk in at any minute?”
“But I don’t feel like moving.”
“ShinoaaAAh!” He felt a hand placed on his shoulder and jumped. He turned
around to find Mika standing before him, looking at him with a perplexed
expression.
“Uh good morning?”
“G-good morning. You’re here early,” Yuu replied nervously. Crap he had not
been experiencing for Mika to show up already.
“I got here the same time I always do,” the blonde stated. The nervous teen
watched as Mika dung into his pocket and took out his phone. “See, 7:53am.
That's basically around the time I always get here.” Damn it. He must have
wasted more time than he had initially thought arguing with Shinoa.
“Oh uh yeah. My bad. So that means class will be starting soon. I better get to
my seat before Mrs. Hanayori kicks my ass.” Here goes to not scaring him. He
knew he was acting very out of character but he just couldn't really look at
him right now without thinking about what has been on his mind since Saturday.
He hoped Mika would forgive him and made an internal promise that he would try
to act normal soon.
                                     ~ ~ ~
So far it’s been three days and Yuu hasn't been able to keep that promise. Just
looking at Mika made his heart race. He just knew that if he were to engage in
conversation with the very attractive male, he would end up confessing right
then and there in some embarrassing way. He just knew it. Yuu knew that he was
obviously avoiding Mika but he hoped that he had been careful enough at playing
it off.
It was hardest at lunch. Normally he would be excited to be able to sit next to
Mika, but lately it’s been hell. All he could concentrate on was the feeling of
Mika’s leg occasionally brushing up next to his and how they would bump arms
when reaching around the table. Each time would make Yuu feel tingly and warm
inside. He would try to talk to the others about things to distract himself,
but even then he could feel Mika’s gaze on him. Mika obviously knew something
was up and was probably wondering why Yuu was avoiding him, but Yuu needed to
keep him the dark for a little longer. He just knew that now was not the right
time to confess. He just knew that he would screw things up and everything
would end with Mika hating him, leaving him heart broken.
As days passed Yuu found it more and more difficult to be around Mika that he
found himself starting to arrive to classes late and on Thursday began to sit
between Kimizuki and Yoichi at lunch. He felt that if he maybe kept this act up
for another week, he would be able to face Mika without getting flustered
again. His plan was ruined later that day after Latin when Mika decided to
confront him and Yuu ended up running away like an idiot.
“What happened to not scaring him away?” Yuu mumbled to himself, now home from
school and wrapped up in a jumble of blankets on his bed. “Mika must surely
hate me now.” He sighed to himself and burrowed deeper into the covers. He sat
there for a while and thought about what to do when he felt a vibration on his
right side. Somebody had sent him a text. He began to squirm, attempting to
free himself from the fluffy nest he had buried himself in, and eventually was
able to reach his phone and see who had texted him. It was Shinoa and Yuu
mentally cursed to himself.
Shinoa: So Yoichi told me about what happened in Latin
“God damn it Yoichi,” Yuu muttered out loud.
Yuu: so now u no how much of a screw up I am
Shinoa: Dude ur not a screw up but u really did screw up this time. I told u
not 2 scare him away
Yuu: I know but im just not ready 2 confes yet
Shinoa: Alright then dont confess. But u need to at least quit ignoring him or
he’ll think he did something wrong.
Shinoa: Well speak of the devil. I just got a text from the romancer himself.
Wait did Mika just text Shinoa of all people. Why the hell was Mika texting
her?
Yuu:Mika texted u??? Y is Mika txting u??? Wut does he want???
Shinoa: Relax cherry boy Im sure he just wants 2 know y u r ignoring him. I'll
figure out whats up and then I'll text u back in a bit
Yuu tossed his phone off in a direction he didn't really pay attention too and
hopped off his bed and began to roll around on the floor. “Why did all this
having a crush stuff have to be so embarrassing?” Yuu yelled out.
His freak out must have been pretty loud since no more than two minutes later
there was a knock on the door. The person on the other side didn't bother with
waiting for a response and barged in not a second later.
“I have no idea what you’re yelling about but I figured whatever it is, it's
upsetting you and it's my parental duty to figure out what the hell is wrong.”
The man that had intruded was Guren Ichinose, Yuu’s adopted father with two
plates of Mika’s cake in his hands. Yuu got up off the floor and crawled up on
to his bed and Guren sat next to him. He handed Yuu a plate and then started to
dig into his own slice.
“Hmm this cake is pretty good. Who made it?” Guren asked casually.
“Mika and who said you could have a slice?”
Guren rolled his eyes. “So what's making you jump around and scream like a
baboon?”
“I wasn't jumping, I was rolling on the floor and well umm. It's kinda hard to
talk about.” Yuu didn't want to straight up tell his adopted father everything.
It just didn't feel right to talk to a guardian about this kind of thing.
“Oh so you have a crush then.”
“Whaaa,” Yuu couldn't believe he figured it out that fast, he almost dropped
the plate in his hand. Was he that easy to read?
“Looks like I hit the nail on the head. Well in that case, I’ll give you this
one piece of advice. Just let your true self show and you should be able to woo
her eventually,” Guren said and then consumed his last bite of cake. “Well
that's all I have to say. I hope things work out.” With that, he got up and
left.
“Well that was some advice,” Yuu mumbled as he finished off the last of his
cake. He set his plate down on his nightstand and his phone began to buzz. He
started to look for his phone, first in the mess of blankets, under the
pillows, and under the bed. He was starting to regret throwing his phone. He
surveyed the room and found it by the back corner near his closet. He grabbed
it to find a new text from Shinoa.
Shinoa: Alright I talked 2 ur man. Hes going to ask u 2 talk to him and u
better go along.
Yuu: fine I will
                                     ~ ~ ~
The next morning came and Yuu braced himself to be approached by Mika. He got
to class at his normal time and discovered only Kimizuki and Shinoa were in the
classroom. That's not too unusual. He sat down at his desk and messed around on
his phone, looking up occasionally to check if Mika had walked in yet. It
wasn't thirty seconds till the bell rang that Mika made it into the classroom
and promptly went straight to his seat. Now that was unusual. When class ended,
Mika immediately left the classroom without a single glance toward Yuu. Was
Mika now mad at him? What did Shinoa tell him?
His next chance to see Mika was lunch. Yuu believed he was sure to show up then
but in the end, he never showed up.
Latin was similar to English with Mika showing up as late as he possibly could.
Yuu watched him as he made his way to his seat and quietly began to get ready
for class. Yuu was starting to believe Mika really hated him. The last bell of
the day rang and Yuu slowly walked out of the classroom. He was halfway out the
door when he felt a hand grab his wrist. He looked up to find a beautiful set
of blue eyes he didn't realize that he missed looking into his own.
“Come with me,” Mika ordered as he pulled Yuu behind him down the hallway.
Mika led him to a locked classroom on the second floor. He released Yuu’s wrist
to dig in his pockets and pulled out a key. Mika unlock the door and pulled him
inside, locking the door behind him. The blond then walked over to go sit on a
desk by the window and looked up a Yuu.
“So Yuu. Why have you been avoiding me?”
***** Conversations *****
Chapter Summary
     So what's going down with Mika and Yuu?
Chapter Notes
     Alright guys I tried to update early since a bunch of you asked. I'm
     not sure if its exactly what you were hopping for but I hope you
     enjoy!
Alright. Mika has done everything that Shinoa told him to, even though he
didn't really agree with all of it. He had done his best to ignore Yuu all day
and resisted stealing glances even when it was oh so tempting. He also didn't
show up to lunch, which hurt him even more since lunch was starting to become
his favorite part of the day. Though if all this would get Yuu to talk to him
again, he would do just about anything. He truly despised not having his
attention and being able to see his genuine bright smiles and hear his sweet
laughter. He pretty much just wanted the old Yuu back.
“So Yuu. Why have you been avoiding me?”
Mika watched as Yuu came closer and sat on top of the adjacent desk. He was
looking downward the entire time, avoiding eye contact. Mika watched and waited
patiently while Yuu took in a deep breath and slowly looked up into Mika’s
eyes, causing the blonde’s heart to skip a beat. His face was slightly flushed
and had a worried look in his eyes.
“Alright. Just so you know, you did nothing wrong. It's all me and I'm sorry.”
Yuu looked back down and up again, seeming to be deep in thought.
“I’ve been avoiding you because just looking at you gives me this weird feeling
and I’ve felt like if I talk to you I'll stay something stupid
because...because…” Yuu paused and Mika waited eagerly to hear his next words,
heart beating rapidly and starting to lean forward slightly.
“Because...I-I had this weird dream the other night about you jacking this
guy's RV and dragging me with you and we got high and were driving away with
twenty thousand cops chasing us and I just couldn't look at you without
thinking of that dream. It was just so vivid Mika. It was all I could think
about for days.”
Mika looked at Yuu, dumbfounded. It was obvious that Yuu was lying. He wanted
to get up and demand the truth, but Shinoa’s words echoed through his mind.
What ever the heck was bothering him, Yuu would tell him when he was ready. He
just needed to be patient.
“Wow. And I’ve been scared of your driving.” Mika decided to just accept the
lie and hoped that by doing so, Yuu would talk to him again and that was the
only thing that really mattered at this point.
“Hehe yeah. I'm sorry for not telling you sooner and for avoiding you. You
didn't deserve any of that.”
Yuu was staring downwards again, studying the tiles on the floor. Mika watched
Yuu as he tried to force nervous laughter. The sight just riled something in
Mika and he felt himself get up and walk over towards the boy before him. Yuu
looked up briefly and as a pair of arms wrapped around his shoulders and he
found his face brushing up against soft blonde locs.
“It’s okay Yuu.”
At first Yuu was tense but he soon relaxed, lifting his arms and hugging Mika
back. The hug didn't last long. It was brief, but still long enough to bring
the boys back together and bring Yuu the confidence he needed.
When they broke apart, neither dared to look into the other’s eyes. Mika swore
he felt Yuu’s heart beating as well as his own. After a few brief words, the
two walked together outside to where the buses were. They walked in silence,
but comfortable silence. The kind they tended to have all those years ago back
when they were younger and had unconsciously longed for. Mika waved goodbye to
Yuu and boarded the bus. Once on the noisy vehicle filled with rowdy teenagers
that were eager to start their weekends, Mika looked out the window and spotted
Yuu. A while back he started getting in the habit of watching Yuu as he made
his way to the student parking lot after school. He usually just watched,
laughing quietly to himself about the dorky things he would do as he walked.
But today all that raced through his mind were the past events of what had just
happened in that empty classroom. Mika couldn't help but wonder, what was it
that he wanted Yuu to say? What was he so eager to hear? He wasn't sure but he
felt that he would learn soon enough.
                                     ~ ~ ~
It’s Saturday afternoon. Exactly twenty-two hours since that conversation he
had with Yuu in that classroom and for once, he was very thankful for Shinoa’s
advice. For three of those twenty-two hours, Mika had been texting Yuu. It
wasn't about anything really in particular. Their subjects seemed to revolve
around corny movies, the existence of string cheese, and who’s the worst
driver. It was almost as if the two were catching up after their week of
awkwardness and silence. Mika couldn't deny that it pleased him to no end to be
talking to Yuu again. Even if it was simply through text. The conversation soon
progressed to the topic of halloween with would be next weekend.
Yuu: So do u hav a costume yet?
Mika:Not yet. Though at the same time I don't think I need one. We’re too old
for trick or treating.
Yuu: U still need 2 have a costume 4 holloween and i think shinoa talked about
ther being a huge party and the hole schools invited
Mika: A party? Will there be alcohol? If there is I don't know
Yuu: Im sure there’s alcohol its going 2 b @ kruls place but kruls rich so it
ll be worth it
Mika:I don't know. I'm not usually one for parties
Yuu:Pleeeeeaaaaaaassssssseeeeeeee miiiiiiikkkkkkkkkaaaaaaaaaa
Mika stared at the childish message and considered what to do. He knew his
foster mother would never let him go to a big party, but he could lie. As long
as he didn't drink, he could get away with it. Plus Yuu was begging him and he
found it hard to resist.
Mika:Alright I'll go
Yuu:Yes!!! Now we jus need 2 get costumes. How about today?
Today? Mika thought and didn't think there was anything he needed to do and he
definitely wouldn't mind hanging out with Yuu. He walked out of his room and
searched for his foster mother. It didn't take him long, finding her in the
laundry room.
“Hey mom can I go with Yuu to look for a halloween costume?”
“Sure. Just try to be home before eight. I'm making lasagna and it isn't very
good cold.”
“Got it and thanks!”
Mika hurried back to his room and replied to Yuu.
Mika:Today’s good. I just have to be home before eight.
Yuu:Awesome ill come get you then. Also do u mind if the others come?? Kimizuki
yoichi and mitsuba dont have costumes either an shinoa just wanted to tag along
Honestly Mika would rather have it be just the two of them, but it would be
rude to refuse them coming. Also they’d probably go anyway and he did enjoy
their company.
Mika:Sure
Yuu:Great on my way
Mika quickly grabbed his wallet and searched his closet for a comfortable
jacket. He decided to slip on a faux leather jacket that he forgot that he had
and ran down the stairs to wait for Yuu.
It didn't take long for the truck to pull up into his drive away and Mika
walked out of his house immediately as it came into view.
This time, Yuu didn't leave his truck and waited for Mika to join him. He
figured that the others must be inside. Mika walked up to the truck and climbed
in and noticed Yuu was the only one inside.
Yuu was on his phone, probably texting the others. “Yo,” Yuu greeted, looking
up once he finished his text.
“Hey. Where are the others?”
“Kimizuki’s driving Yoichi and Mitsuba’s sister is driving Mitsuba and Shinoa.
They’re going to meet us there.”
“Ah nice.”
Yuu put away his phone and started to drive off.
“So what kind of costume do you think you’re going to get?” Yuu asked, looking
over at Mika for a split second before redirecting his attention towards the
road.
“Hmm I don't know. What about you?”
“I don't know either but it’s gotta be something cool.”
“Cool? Honestly I think something cute would suit you better,” Mika teased.
Yuu looked over at Mika and swerved a little. Mika grabbed onto the armrests in
panic. ”Whoa eyes on the road Yuu!”
“S-sorry. But what do you mean cute?”
“Well I just think something cute would fit you better or maybe even something
stupid looking.”
“Hey what’s that supposed to mean?” Yuu pouted and Mika laughed. They continued
their conversation the rest of the way there. Just joking around and enjoying
each other’s company.
Chapter Summary
     Let the costume picking begin!
Chapter Notes
     I'm sorry this chapter is so late. I did a trade with a friend where
     she drew me fanart in exchange for a fic and so I was spending time
     writing that up for her. It's an omega verse fic with Karamatsu and
     Todomatsu from Osomatsu-san. I haven't ever written a full on smut
     fic before, so it was nice being able to gain some experience for
     when I write some future chapters in this fic. The fanart I got in
     return was a really nice NSFW Mikayuu fanart. I'll post a link if my
     friend ever decides to post it. Also, I'm sorry to say that I am
     going to still post chapters a bit slowly for the next three months.
     I have finals coming up and several papers and projects that are due
     in the next few weeks. I also I have to get ready for an anime
     convention in May so I'm going to be pretty busy with that as well.
     I'm going to try to post as much as I can. Either way, please enjoy
     these dorks getting ready for Halloween.
They arrived at a large orange tent in front of the mall. It looked somewhat
worn and donned a generic jack-o-lantern face on above the entrance. Shinoa,
Mitsuba, Yoichi, and Kimizuki were all waiting outside, chattering about
possible ideas as Yuu and Mika walked up to join them.
Shinoa was the first to notice their arrival and smirked as they neared. “Hey
nerds. You ready to look for dorky outfits we’ll only wear once in our lives?”
“Hell yeah!” Yuu cheered and Mika just gave a small smile.
The group walked into the brightly colored tent. Animatronic skeletons and
witches greeted them at the entrance, shouting “Happy Halloween” followed by
shrilled electronic laughter. Yoichi was the only one who was frightened by the
sudden noise and grabbed onto Yuu as he yelped. Everyone laughed and comforted
the now pouting boy. Once fully inside the dimly lit tent, the group split off
into two groups. Shinoa and Mitsuba made their way over to the woman’s costumes
and the rest made their way to the men's.
Mika looked through the racks of outfits ranging from corny to just plain
weird. He found a couple that grabbed his eye to try on later.
“Hey Mika. What do you think of this?” Yuu held up a John Cena costume. “Pretty
cool right?”
Mika gave Yuu a questioning look. “If being a meme is cool then yes.” Mika did
not try to keep up with internet culture but he at least knew about John Cena.
“Oh shoot I forgot about that.” Yuu put the costume back and quickly found
another. He held up a Slender Man costume. “This?”
“It would be cool but it would be hard to eat or drink with the mask.”
Yuu sighed. “True.” He put it back.
“Hey princess. I found your costume,” Kimizuki called out to Yuu. Yoichi was
behind him snickering as he held up a Cinderella costume complete with the wig
and shoes.
“Hell no,” Yuu replied instantly.
Kimizuki laughed, pleased with his joke, and left to return the outfit to its
original location. Yoichi then took the chance to approach Yuu.
“Hey Yuu?” Yoichi called out with his hands behind his back, clearing holding
some sort of costume behind him.
Yuu looked up from the gangster costume he was looking at. “What’s up?”
Yoichi looked down and then looked up again. “Would you like to be matching
minions with me?” Yoichi asked genuinely, revealing the costume that was behind
his back.
Yuu stared at Yoichi in disbelief but quickly stopped when he realized his
innocent friend was serious. “I'm sorry Yoichi but Minions aren't really cool
if you know what I mean.”
“Oh uh right. Umm how about you Mika?”
“Sorry but I already have some ideas about what I’m going to do.” That was a
bit of a lie. Mika didn’t really have any plans but he really did not want to
be one of those yellow things.
“Oh okay.” Yoichi looked down at the costume in his hands and sauntered away to
meet back up with Kimizuki.
Eventually, everyone had about three costumes and decided to try them on. They
made their way to the dressing rooms that were really just a jumbled mess of
curtains side by side, each including a small bench and mirror inside. Once in
the dressing room, Mika looked at the outfits that were in his possession. He
had a chef, police officer, and an Anakin Skywalker costume. He figured it
would be best to try on the chef costume first. It wasn't hard for him to put
on the outfit which consisted of a white shirt, apron, and the stereotypical
chef’s hat. He observed himself in the mirror. It didn't look too bad on him,
if anything it was kind of plain for a Halloween costume. He guessed that he
could add blood or something to spice things up.
“Alright guys are you ready?” Yuu called out. Everyone answered in agreement
and they all exited their respective rooms to show off their new outfits. The
first person Mika saw was Yuu who was excited and sported a Ghostbusters
costume. Next was Kimizuki who was dressed as your average zombie filled by
Yoichi who was something green. An alien? He got a bit closer and noticed that
the chocolate haired boy was wearing some sort of onesie that was green and
white. On the hood were two cuties eyes, small nostrils, roses cheeks, and a
small smile. It was a frog. This high school sophomore is wearing a frog
onesie.
“Hey what’s with the frog costume Yoich?” Yuu asked in confusion when his eyes
laid upon the boy.
“I wanted the bunny but they were all taken so I thought the frog was a good
second,” Yoichi replied shyly.
Yuu then turned to the pink haired boy who was off in his own world staring at
Yoichi. “Yo Pinkie, what’s with choosing the most normal looking costume you
possibly could?”
Kimizuki looked over at Yuu in embarrassment but quickly recovered, returning
to his stoic expression. “Hey it works and you’re on to talk dumbass.”
“What do you mean by that?” Yuu asked with slight irritation.
“I’m saying that people have been dressing up as Ghostbusters every Halloween
since the movie debut.”
“Yeah but I'm cool right?” He turned around and looked at Mika with pleading
eyes. “Mika I'm cool right?”
“Yes you are cool Yuu,” Mika answered with a slight smile. He had to hold
himself back from laughing at how desperate Yuu was too look cool.
“See Mika says I'm cool!”
Kimizuki rolled his eyes and began to make his way back into the dressing room.
“Whatever. Ready for round two?”
Yuu and the others followed behind. Mika was almost into the room when Yuu
stopped him.
“By the way Mika I like the chef but you should do something cooler,” Yuu
stated with a pointed finger.
Mika laughed. “I got it Yuu.” The two then walked into their respective rooms
for round two.
Mika looked at the two outfits that were left and decided to go ahead with the
police uniform. It was a bit tighter than he had expected. He had gotten it in
his size but for some reason he felt like it was too small. His shirt clung
tightly to his chest and showed off his lean torso with the first two buttons
undone, revealing a bit of his chest, while the pants showed off his ass
nicely. It also came with a hat and a pair of plastic handcuffs. He looked back
at the packaging to find that it was actually a “sexy” police officer uniform.
Well that made a lot of sense. He was thinking about changing when he heard
Yuu’s voice calling for them to show off to each other again. He sighed and
stood there debating for a minute and decided to just go ahead and join the
others.
He walked out to find Yuu dressed up as a knight, Kimizuki as a pirate, and
Yoichi as Bilbo Baggins. Yuu and Kimizuki were currently arguing over who was
the most generic when Mika walked out, catching all of their attention. Yuu’s
previously annoyed expression quickly transformed to one of surprise. Kimizuki
and Yoichi were shocked as well but no one could compare to Yuu that was
forever staring at him. The starring made him nervous but on the other hand, he
was pleased. For some reason, it was a nice feeling to have Yuu check him out,
especially since he hadn't been looking at him much lately. Yuu didn't stop
starring till Kimizuki nudged him back to reality.
“Oh uh yeah. Costume looks nice Mika but not spooky enough. Time for round
three!” Yuu then sprinted back to his dressing room and they all followed suit.
Mika couldn’t help but smile. Yuu was too cute.
Once back in the room, for what he hoped was the last time, he started to
change into the Anakin Skywalker costume. The costume was pretty comfortable.
He liked the way the sleeves were loose and how the boots and pants were built
together. The teen also couldn’t deny his childlike enjoyment in getting to
carry a lightsaber around. He felt like this was probably going to be his best
choice. When Yuu’s voice resonated through the area, signaling that it was time
to show off their costumes for the last time, he walked out proudly.
His eyes first lied upon Kimizuki in a military soldier's outfit and then to
Yoichi as a cute bumblebee. He felt like both of their costumes suited them but
another thought went through his mind. Where was Yuu?
“Yo Assface, where are you? You called us out but you weren’t ready yourself?”
Kimizuki yelled out.
“I’m coming! My shirt got snagged on the door.” After a handful of seconds, Yuu
emerged. He donned a Luke Skywalker costume and started to bounce with
excitement when he saw Mika.
“Whoa dude we match!” Yuu said with glee.
“Yeah we do,” Mika replied with a laugh.
Yuu reached for his side and pulled out his lightsaber. “Fight me father.”
Mika smirked and reached for his own. “You’re not even supposed to be born
yet.”
The two self-proclaimed Jedi sprang out at each other and started swinging
their toy swords around while the others watched from afar. The sound of
clashing plastic and childish laughter echoed throughout the room. They were so
into their battle that they almost knocked down several shelves and were close
to whacking a young girl in the face. Mika didn't care he was probably causing
trouble or that he was getting dirty looks. He was just having a blast being
able to act like a kid with Yuu and was enjoying smiling like an idiot along
with his childhood friend. With Kimizuki yelling at them in the background to
finish the hell up, they decided to end it in a draw.
“Alright! I think I know what costumes we’re going to get,” Yuu remarked,
slightly out of breath and with a huge grin on his face.
Mika was about to agree with him but was stopped by a loud voice behind them.
“Wait! I have another set of costumes for you two goof balls,” Shinoa exclaimed
while holding up two costumes with Mitsuba following casually behind. Mika
observed the outfits in her hands. One was a vampire set and the other was a
werewolf. Both seemed very basic.
“Shinoa we already decided and also those are so stereotypical and lame,” Yuu
remarked.
“They may be stereotypical but the aren't lame. Don't knock ‘em till you try
‘em. I have a feeling you’ll like these a lot better,” Shinoa stated as she
handed each of them one of the costumes.
Yuu gave her a skeptical look but took the outfit and headed off towards the
dressing rooms. Mika decided to follow, assuming it was probably best to do
what she wanted.
Once inside, Mika looked over the outfit in his hands. Shinoa had handed him
the vampire one which was pretty simple. It had a cheap white dress shirt,
black slacks, a cravat, fancy looking vest, and a stereotypical red and black
cape. Honestly, the cape was the only thing that screamed “vampire” to him.
These rest seemed like regular dress clothes, but Mika put them on anyway,
deciding that Shinoa would probably kick his ass if he didn't. Plus he kind of
feels like he owes her since her advice made it so he was able to talk with Yuu
again.
He put everything on and then checked himself in the mirror. He was surprised
to find that he was actually quite with the way the outfit looked on him. He
felt like it really complimented his lean figure and he found himself enjoying
the way the cape covered him and followed him from behind. He liked Anakin but
this one was starting to grow on him.
Soon enough he could hear Shinoa’s voice calling out, asking if they were
ready. He answered her by emerging from the dressing room. He walked out in
front of everyone who looked all looked at him with shocked and pleased looks.
“I knew that was a good idea. It really looks nice on you Mika.” Shinoa said
while very pleased.
Mika gave a small smile as a response and glanced around, noticing that Yuu
hadn't come out yet. Not a second later, a familiar grumbling could be heard
behind him. He turned around to find an irritated, yet very cute looking Yuu.
Mika could feel his cheeks start to warm up. Yuu was the cutest werewolf he had
ever seen. He had on a simple tank top and tan capri pants along with adorable
brown paws on his hands and feet, wolf ears on his head, and a fluffy tail.
Mika had to resist staring and the urge to go up and pet him.
“What the hell Shinoa. I thought werewolves were supposed to be beastly and
manly, not cute and fluffy!” Yuu cried out with cheeks flushed from
embarrassment.
“Awww I knew that would suit you! You look so cute,” Shinoa replied while
walking up and rubbing his head. Mika felt a pang of jealousy.
“I wanted to look cool this Halloween not cute!” Yuu grumbled.
“But look Yuu, you match Mika.” Shinoa motioned over towards the blond. Yuu
hadn't actually looked at him yet and Mika was starting to feel a bit nervous.
Mika watched as the pair of green eyes took him in from the bottom up. Soon
enough blue met green and Mika swore he saw the other boy’s cheeks grow a shade
darker. Yuu turned away before he could come to any real conclusion.
“T-the costume really looks cool on you,” Yuu muttered softly.
“You guys have got to get them! You’ll match and you both look great,” Shinoa
stated as she clapped her hands together.
Yoichi, Kimizuki, and Mitsuba all nodded in agreement.
“Mika looks great. But I just look cute. I want to look cool-” Yuu was cut off
by Shinoa who dragged him down and whispered something in his ear. Yuu’s jerked
away and Shinoa giggled once she had finished with what she had to say.
“Alright, I'll go with it,” Yuu mumbled. He looked up at Mika. “Only if Mika
goes with it.”
Mika smiled. “Sure I was planning on it anyway.”
They all then made their way up to check out once everyone had their desired
costume picked out. Mika made sure to grab a pair of cheap vampire fangs before
he got to the cash register. Mika had a feeling that this Halloween would be
one to remember.
Chapter Summary
     In which Yuu picks up Mika to take him to the party that may possibly
     change his life.
Chapter Notes
     Hey guys! I can't believe it's been two months since my last update.
     I'm really sorry about that. With exams, an anime convention, and job
     drama, my hands have been full. Thankfully all of that is over now
     and now I'm back on schedule. This chapter's pretty short but I
     promise you the next two are pretty long and jammed packed with
     things you guys may like, if you catch my drift. Anyways I hope you
     guys enjoy.
The day of the party was finally here. Mika was currently busying himself in
the bathroom mirror with trying to make sure his fake fangs looked straight and
would stay in place. Once he was happy with them, he checked himself out in the
mirror. The teen had to say that he thought he looked classy, and he found some
pride in that. He was just about to exit the bathroom when a bottle on the
cabinet caught his eye. It was a bottle of his favorite cologne that he had
forgotten that he had. Mika spritzed it by his neck and on some sections of his
outfit just for the heck of it. He sniffed himself, checked himself out once
again, and then made his way downstairs once he was satisfied.
“Oh look at you! My handsome vampire!” Mika’s foster mother exclaimed as her
blond son came into view. “Oh stand right there and let me get my phone. I just
have to get a photo.” She ran off and Mika was left standing awkwardly in front
of the stairs. He messed with a corner of his cape and hoped that she wouldn’t
be long. Yuu was supposed to show up in just a few minutes. Over a minute
passed by and Mika decided to go look for her is his large home. He found her
in the kitchen shuffling through drawers.
“Mom are you okay?” Mika asked while watching her from afar.
“Yeah. I just can't remember where I put my phone. I must have stored it away
somewhere when I was cleaning earlier,” she replied, looking up with a worried
expression.
Mika reached into his pocket and pulled out his own phone and handed it to her.
“Here use mine.”
“Oh! Why didn't I think of that earlier? Alright, go stand over there and
smile!” She held up the device took the shot but not a second after the
doorbell resonated throughout the home.
Shoot he had wasted too much time. “I’ll send the picture to you later but
Yuu’s here so I have to go.” He walked up to her to grab his phone but she
moved her hand out of the way.
“Go answer the door and bring him in. I'll take a picture of the two of you
before you leave”.
Mika groaned internally but did as he was told. He had been trying to put off
his foster mother’s meeting with Yuu. Not because he was afraid she wouldn't
approve of his friend or anything like that, it was more that he was afraid she
would say something embarrassing or scare Yuu away. He wanted to make sure
everything was perfect but he figured that the two meeting like this wouldn't
be too bad.
Mika opened the front door and revealed a slightly flustered looking Yuu in his
cute werewolf costume. For some reason, the way he looked standing before him
in the dim light of the setting sun was more enchanting than when he saw him at
the store last weekend. He seemed nervous with eyes averted and right hand
messing with one of his plush ears. Mika was worried at first but realized that
this is the closest Yuu has gotten to the inside of his house. Yuu looked up
and seemed to be about to speak, but Mika’s foster mother called out from
inside, stopping him before he started.
“What are you waiting for Mika? Bring him in!”
Yuu looked up at Mika with a puzzled look. “My foster mom wants to take a
picture of us together. Honestly, I'm sure it’s just her method of getting a
chance to meet you.”
“Umm okay,” Yuu nodded and followed Mika inside. Yuu was taking the chance to
look all around the house with wide eyes and Mika held back a giggle. Yuu
looked like he was in an art museum surrounded by the work of legends.
“Oh look at you! You’re such a handsome werewolf,” Mika’s mom exclaimed as the
two came into view. Yuu’s cheeks reddened with the complement. Yuu thanked her
and she ordered the two to stand next to each other so could get the shot. Once
the picture was taken, Mika’s foster mother handed him back his phone and
proceed to introduce herself to Yuu.
“You're Yuu right? Mika has told me so much about you. You were all he talked
about really talked about when we first brought him home.”
Now it was Mika’s turn to be embarrassed.
“Alright, enough about that. You two run off and be safe,“ She said finally and
waved her hand in a shooing motion.
“Thanks Mom and we will,” Mika replied while pulling Yuu behind him by the
wrist.
“Also it was nice meeting you Yuu,” she called out as she suddenly remembered.
“It was nice meeting you too mam,” Yuu was able to reply before the door shut
behind them.
Once they were outside in the chilly late October weather, Mika released Yuu’s
wrist reluctantly. “Sorry about my mom,” Mika apologized while scratching the
back of his head, “She can be really overbearing sometimes.”
“No it’s fine. She’s really nice,” Yuu replied, “Also I finally got to go
inside your house!”
Mika chuckled. “Well, all you really got to see was the hallway and the
kitchen.”
“It still counts. I can't wait to brag to the others about it.”
They both laughed and jumped into Yuu’s truck to get out of the cold and head
out to the party. The beginning was silent for the most part, with both of them
stealing glances at one another when they could. Mika knew Yuu was watching him
but he couldn't reprimand him since he was doing the same.
Yuu’s turn to stare was when they were stopped at a stop light. He was watching
Mika intensely, starting to make Mika nervous when he finally yelped in
surprise.
“Wait Mika. Are you eyes red?!? They haven't always been red right? What the
hell happened?” Yuu was stunned and confused while also in awe.
“Relax Yuu and eyes on the road. The lights green,” Mika nonchalantly replied.
He was waiting to see when Yuu would notice but he didn't think that he would
respond like this. “They’re just contacts.”
Yuu accelerated and once he was at the desired speed, he turned to glance at
Mika and ask, “When the heck did you get your hands on colored contacts? Aren't
they super expensive?”
“The price isn't too bad and I bought them about a month ago.”
“A month ago? Why the hell did you buy red contacts a month ago?”
“Well, you know how I used to switch schools all the time right? Also how not
too many people would pay attention to me? So sometimes I would like to play
little “tricks” if you can call them that, and see if anyone would notice
towards the end of my stays. For my last school, I decided to buy a couple
packs of red contacts and wear a pair for a week and see if anyone would
notice.”
“Did they?”
“Did they what?”
“Did they notice?”
“Not really. Only one kid who sat next to me in class and several teachers. No
one said anything about them though.”
“Dang man. How the hell did barely anyone notice? If I was there I would have
noticed immediately when you walked through the door! The only reason I didn't
notice them till now was because I was distracted.” Yuu explained with pride.
Mika smiled and looked down. “I’m sure you would Yuu. People just don't pay
much attention to the quiet kid they know won't be spending time with for
long.”
“Well that’s stupid.” Mika looked up at Yuu. “Well, you never have to worry
about that again because I don't plan on leaving you alone ever again,” Yuu
exclaimed with a huge smile which caused both of them to smile and blush.
It got quiet for a while until Mika spoke up. “Thanks Yuu. I don't know what I
did to deserve a friend like you.”
Friend. That word felt weird now for some reason. Usually the idea of having
friends filled Mika with extreme happiness but now when it was directed at Yuu,
it left Mika wondering. Was he not happy with their current relationship? Did
he want something more? He chose not to dwell on it for long. He needed to
focus on the happy stuff. It was Halloween after all.
“So this Krul’s house is super huge you say?”
“Yeah she’s loaded man. And her family lets her throw parties like almost every
month! I’ve only gone to like two of them and They’re not bad. Loaded with
people though and lots of people doing drugs and drinking alcohol. I don't know
how she’s able to get away with it. I usually just go when the others drag me
and for the free food.”
“Free food does sound like a good selling point,” Mika agreed leaning further
back in his seat.
“It sure is. She’s got the good stuff.” Yuu paused for a minute then added,
“Also Mika if you ever feel uncomfortable at any time just tell me and we’ll
leave.”
Mika was thankful for Yuu’s concern. He couldn't deny he was starting to feel
worried with all the talk about drugs and alcohol, things he could get in
trouble over if his parents ever found out he was near. “Thanks Yuu. I’ll let
you know.”
They continued on with small talk until they arrived at the open gate to what
looked like a mansion. If people thought his house was big, they clearly hadn't
seen Krul’s. The place had to be at least triple the size of his complete with
a well maintain yard, a beautiful garden, and swimming pool, which no one dared
to enjoy in this weather. Yuu slowly drove around, looking for a spot to park.
The large driveway was filled to the brim with cars but he managed to find a
good spot close to the gate. Mika could hear and feel the music blasting from
inside and the sound of voices of all kinds all around while teenagers in all
kinds of crazy costumes swarmed the place like ants. The scene was like
something you would see in movies.
Once Yuu had successfully parked the truck he looked over at Mika and started
to unbuckled his seat belt. Mika looked back at him and followed his lead. “You
ready?” The young werewolf asked.
“As I'll ever be.”
The two then exited and made their way to the house to embark on a spooky
themed ride.
